Glorious. I just hope they choose an appropriate style of window... cheap-looking windows would really ruin the look of this building.

I assume the building is going to be gutted, which is a shame because some of the units still have beautiful interior details intact or mostly intact, with tiled fireplaces and real wood built-in cabinets.

Regarding the windows, I'd almost rather see a modern retractable casement that just complements the architecture than some sorta-kinda historic looking double hung with those cheesy sandwiched mullions that comes across as half-assed and cheap looking.

^ Well we're proud and I'm sure ardecila is.

But get ready for a slew of noobs asking why they don't make the Sears Tower taller and change more designs to look like the Ritz, etc.

One thing I don't understand is whether this Koo building is brand new, on land not currently occupied by the existing hotel. If so, then this is not so much a redevelopment of Purple Hotel as an addition, so what happens to the old structure?

Funny, I just rode by this today. The new structure is on a triangular site which is currently either a parking lot or at least level ground, and seems separate from the current hotel site.

I told my relatives about the plan to cover up much of the purple, and one of them suggested protesting by holding up signs which are purple and nothing else. I've always loved this building, and I'm just glad it's being preserved. The architect is John Macsai, one of Chicago's most underrated modernists.

My concerns:
1) It looks like the Fulton Cold Storage signs on top are gone. That's just wrong. Plus it will make killaviews' avatar somewhat obsolete
2) The plaza/ courtyard seems excessively large for this area. More landscaping and seating might help
3) The new building is pretty bland. It's similar to what they're doing to the Netsch buildings over at UIC

Great to know the provenance of the Rosenwald Apartments. I pass by the complex a few times a month and always take a second (or third) look. The brickwork is really sharp. Great Art Moderne doorways. I'd no idea about the courtyards - wow.

Cool! The butt-glazed glass preserves the sheer look of the brick, and the new addition replaces some slapdash 1-story brick buildings. I love the effect with the glass and white concrete which makes the brick facade look like it's floating.

I just wish the courtyard was better-designed - it seems like an afterthought right now, but it could be really great. I hope they can program it like this "piazza" in Philly.

Whoa. I'm really stoked; I think it looks rad.

I hope the glass is more transparent than reflective, though. IMO, reflective glass looks so cheap next to brick. It's hard to gauge from those renderings which they're going for.
