[VANCOUVER] LEED Platinum Olympic Village/SE False Creek; a sustainable neighbourhood

I love this project...the 2010 Olympics seem like they are going to be awesome. Roughly how far away is the skiing and similar events from the Olympic Village?

Ok thanks for the info...isnt that a little far from the Olympic Village? Is there easy transportation to get there?

I am planning on going to the Winter Games so I am just trying to figure everything out. Is the skiing and what not being held on a resort? Could I just stay on the mountain? And curious question but how much are tickets to the events?

^ there are two olympic villages. one in Vancouver and one in Whistler so there won't be any commuting necessary.

most of the alpine events will take place in Whistler while snowboaring and aerials (not sure what else) will take place at cypress mountain (20 minutes from downtown Van). everything else like hockey, skating, etc will take place in and around Vancouver.

tickets go on sale this October but not sure what the prices are yet.

I wonder if the millions/billions they spend on this will actually cause even a 1/100,000 of a degree change in temperature. These projects dont do anything to help they environment..they help smug people feel superior to ungreen city movements.

The whole green thing is just a colossal waste of money. I wonder when the next Little Ice Age will completely turn everything on its head and we will be trying to pump as much carbon as we can? Unless of course they feel man is already causing enough warming to reverse Ice Ages....?

^um...while maybe not perfect it does:

-have good density in a central part of the city with good bus, bike, skytrain, walking connections
-LEED buildings

My understanding is that these buildings cost only a small fraction more to build, and I think they save on heating costs. So it's worth doing, especially if everyone starts doing it.

Going LEED no longer costs a premium, it adds less then 3% more if designed from the start, that additional cost is more then made up by reduced operating costs, you start saving from day 1.

Besides every little bit adds up and makes a huge difference. Take a look at the link I posted in another thread. Vancouver is already the leader in N/A but it's not happy and plans on improving itself and chase the global leaders.

Yes. We're probably looking at the summer of 09 before it gets all buttoned up, but I don't have the official dates. Just guessing.

bingo... 2-5% on mid to large projects is the extra cost if you START WITH THE INTENT TO GO LEED. Even on smaller projects where economies of scale dont work you will be only adding 7-12% which is still low relative to the overall cost of your project and the benefits from doing that.

Thank you so much for updating it with those wonderful pictures. I can see that now the exterior structure is mostly taking shape. Only less than 370 days to go till the games, I hope that the city wraps the troubles up quickly and complete this amazing project. Where do you upload all your photos?
