Do we know anything about that green space on the eastern portion of the property? Do they own it? Are they leaving it for later development? Is it too close the rail line for development?

My only issue with the development is that it is still very suburban. It contains no residential, which means it will be very empty at night, and the suburban grass lots around the buildings mean that it is car oriented.

That's where the LRT yard is proposed to be.

It's going up just south of CANMET on Longwood, where the left side of that long blue-glassed building is depicted. These images are from Gowlings' website. So it seems that bird's eye view is already out of date.

This digital flythrough from last year shows a separate building in behind, east of Gowlings:

Correct. And it's a nice looking building! Hopefully the materials live up to the renderings.

Gowling just built a new building in Kitchener too and it looks great.

It’s a shame they ended up building in the MIP in my opinion, they were originally planning on building downtown on the parking lot of their current building.

That’s outside of the MIP. The south side of the Frid street extension is where the LRT maintenance yard is supposed to go.

The Gowling's building is designed to be doubled in length. That is why it shows a longer building in the parks future design pictures.

The land to the east is all owned by Metrolinx except for the Frid Street extension right of way.

It's unfortunate they will not be downtown. Hopefully a similar business makes good use of their old building and it's not empty for long.

The plus is they'll be on site with research staff, and that close contact (once we can all do that again!) should help speed up patent processes and commercialization of the research.

Good to know. Depending on how much and how fast the research facilities grow, the flock convocation of legal eagles will probably need to grow with it (looked up what a flock of eagles is called... that's one of the terms )

New brochure. Lots of nuggets including completion dates for many of the buildings. Most interestingly, they appear to have a tenant for the Westinghouse building conversion.

Federal government invests $10M in McMaster automotive and aerospace electrification hub
McMaster has been awarded $10 million from FedDev Ontario to support an integrated automotive, aerospace and advanced manufacturing network.

Known as iHub, the state-of-the-art facility will expand the existing facilities at McMaster Innovation Park and will leverage another $16.8 million from industry partners including Ford, Honda, Bombardier, Stellantis (Fiat Chrysler) and MHI – RJ Aviation Group, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Labour and MP for Hamilton West-Ancaster Dundas.

Five McMaster engineers – Ali Emadi, Saeid Habibi, Mark Lawford, Ravi Selvaganapathy and Stephen Veldhuis – are leading the initiative, designed to strengthen the capacity and capabilities of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt new technologies to better position themselves in an increasing digital and electrified economy.

Together they will develop, test and incorporate the latest technologies required for the production of next-generation electric and autonomous vehicles and energy-efficient and intelligent aircraft.

Ali Emadi, Canada Research Chair in Transportation Electrification and Smart Mobility and NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Electrified Powertrains, says iHub is a gamechanger for both academic and industry research and innovation and builds on McMaster’s electrification expertise.

“This funding will allow us to step up our game and support the ecosystem in Southern Ontario in an unprecedented way,” he said. “It will allow a wide range of automotive and aerospace companies – from start-ups to SMEs to OEMs – to bring innovative solutions to the market faster and position Canada as a global leader.”

McMaster President, David Farrar, saluted the federal government for its investment that will allow McMaster researchers to build on their successful track record of partnering with industry.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to advance our work with Canadian manufacturers in automotive and aerospace electrification,” he said. “This investment will enable economic recovery by connecting our manufacturers and SMEs, providing training and access to technology, and commercializing new products.”

As a central resource, iHub will connect participants with large automotive and aerospace manufacturers that require solutions, expanding opportunities for local suppliers from across southern Ontario to integrate into global supply chains. It is expected to support more than 230 SMEs, spanning the manufacturing corridor from Windsor to Oshawa, facilitate commercialization of 100 new products and services, and create significant employment.

“Today’s investment will boost our economy by supporting almost 170 local jobs and helping Canadian innovators succeed in a thriving industry,” said Tassi, who made the announcement of behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario.

“iHub will position Hamilton as a global destination for electric automotive and aerospace technologies, while providing direct industry training for at least 200 highly qualified personnel to ensure that our workforce is at the forefront of these technologies for years to come.”

I would guess it's going to take time to deal with potential environmental issues and soil pollution. This used to be part of a Westinghouse manufacturing complex, and later became a metal recycling plant, so who knows what got buried or spilled decades ago.

Yes! Environmental issues, lawyers, funding (Lots going on with this) permits...City, Niagara Escarpment Commission, MTO, different builder wanting different conditions, the university etc.

It is a huge juggling match. Very complex!

Does this fall under NEC jurisdiction? I wouldn't have guessed, given that it's been industrial for so long, and the rail yard is just across the road with Chedoke golf club buffering against the escarpment.

As for MTO, since this is bounded by city streets they probably have little say, aside from wanting to prepare for any traffic impacts to the 403 ramps. But Metrolinx may be among the key stakeholders on account of the planned LRT yard just to the east. And CP would be one too, though this should not impact their access tracks to the Aberdeen Yard.

NEC has say on almost the whole park. Chedoke Creek runs through the park. MTO has a say about 150 m in from the highway. CP will have a say on any residential buildings for a certain distance from the yard.

Even though it has been industrial for a long time, it must meet todays standards.
