I just found this advertisement for Troy Laundry (from the Los Angeles Herald April 25, 1890).

The fact that the 1930 drawing is way out of scale doesn't help in identifying it.

It is a cleverly disguised duplex with four garage spaces:

And a very Happy Equinox (equal night) to everyone. The first day of spring in the US and mid-spring in Britain and Europe and elsewhere. The full moon (on the 27th) after the Vernal Equinox is the Planting Moon/Easter. (Christians delay celebrations until the first, or second, if one's Orthodox, Sunday after that.) Worldwide events are happy excuses for over-doing it and nice reminders of our commonality :-)

Fascinating write-up. Wondered if I hadn't seen Stronghold Steve before, although he does look like he could be related to Saving Sam. He shows little sign of aging . . . . .

Meter-ice with Thora Waverly, Southern California, 1931

I wish I had more information on this but we'll just have to be satisfied that Thora's a pretty girl and that's a dandy refrigerator.

The lubrication equipment looks like what I imagine Drs. Wheeler and Brinkley might have kept on their kitchen operating tables. Maybe just as clean too.

Pretty sure I once used a Zerozone, but it had even less usable storage space than Thora's demo model and required constant defrosting.

Thora Waverly appeared in the 1930 "Vagabond King," featuring Warner Oland. Is it possible that title is on a marquee in one or two photos in this thread? Thora reminds me of actress Judy Greer.

Southern California All-Year Club Ads

It was the ballyhoo of The All-Year Club of Southern California that Danny Devito's voice-over was debunking during the title sequence of "L.A. Confidential". The All-Year Club was in overdrive for decades, publishing ads, brochures, maps, etc.. Read too much of this stuff at once and risk a diabetic coma.

ER: A post right up my alley. It's great to see the house and its clinker brick seemingly unchanged after 113 years.

Good eye, Chuck! Steve looks like he's either holding his breath or getting ready to spit out a mouthful of water.

ER, A bit more detail.

ER, since I live close by to the La Marquise I thought I snap a few better resolution shots.

The Marquise Apartments

Gorgeous Mr Swink! As the Marquise was built in '31 that could be Malibu Tile. And what an outstanding front door! Great entry. Wonderful photos :-)

Down Apablaza 1924

For Noirishers who want to feel like being in Old Chinatown, ask for :

YouTube
Stan Laurel Mandarin Mix up 1924

In the last scene of this silent movie, we are in Apablaza Street - just east after the first alley (without name ?) which goes up to the downtown railroad depot. We are looking west, with the trees and the roofs of the houses of the Plaza higher than the houses on Apablaza. We even see a car driving south on Alameda. And it lasts for several minutes ! What a discovery ! (to me at least...)

Thanks, that was fun. always vaguely disappointed in how the old ones don't age all that well, some cringeworthy moments in here but some nice business, too. interesting to see people (and vehicles) moving through streets we've spent so many hours studying in static photographs. eerie even. found myself surfing around some of the other Stan Laurel shorts, looking in the background set-ups for familiar buildings, hills and horizons. I think there may be enough material to do another post of screen captures.
