I noticed this in Ottawa, it seems like 9 cafés/bakeries out of 10 were big chains. On the other hand downtown Montreal is almost exclusively big-box-stores territory while the local bakeries and cafés are located in the other neighbourhoods. I neved had trouble finding one here in Villeray, there are litteraly 5 or 6 within a 5 min walk.
