The branding of this team just seems off to me and the uniforms are horrendous...but I hope to get down to Halifax for a game at some point in the season. Will be interested to see how they do with ticket sales.

I think you are the first person that I've read who doesn't like the uniforms. Totally OK BTW. They seemed to be well liked across twitter and facebook. What is it you don't like about them?

THUNDERBIRDS PLAY IN FRONT OF HALIFAX FANS FOR THE FIRST TIME

NOV 23, 2019

Halifax, Nova Scotia - The Thunderbirds took the floor for the first time at Scotiabank Center for an exhibition intrasquad game. The arena was packed with elated fans who were anxious to take in their first professional lacrosse game. The teams ran onto the field as fans were cheering and music was pulsing throughout the building.

“It’s hard, you don’t know what to expect playing in a new city,” said Head Coach Mike Accursi. “It was a great atmosphere; it’s going to be an unreal place to play and a real hard place for visiting teams to come play.”

Fans continued cheering their new hometown team, as the players lined up on the white lines to begin the game.

The players came out with an intense first quarter of action. Both teams had a strong first half, but Team Orange sat on top after one, 4-1. Team Purple fought their way back to make it even with a Brad Gillies transition goal on the man down and a Cody Jamieson goal which tied it up.

Team Purple wasn’t done just yet, Clarke Petterson scored his first of the game when Purple took their first lead. Quickly after Petterson’s goal, Ryan Benesch scored his second of the game to put Purple up 6-4. With less than two minutes left, Team Orange scored two goals from Brandon Robinson and Kyle Jackson to tie the game up heading into the second half.

Team Orange started off the second half strong by taking the lead with Jackson and Robsinson’s second goals of the game. Halifax native, Brain Huyghue, scored his first goal to pull the game within one for Team Purple. Petterson scored his second of the game to tie it up at eight all. Team Orange jumped ahead quickly to make it 10-8 with two goals from defender Graeme Hossack.

As the second half of the game wound down, Jamieson scored on a quick shot in transition off of a turnover to pull Team Purple within a goal. Seconds later, Benesch scored his third and fourth goals of the game. After a few quick strikes Petterson netted a hat trick to put his team up by two with a few minutes remaining. With little time left, Graeme Hossack delivered a bone crushing hit at mid floor, followed by a kick pass from Clay Scanlon, which resulted in a Stephen Keogh goal to bring Team Orange within one goal. All of this resulting in a 12-11 win for Team Purple as the first ever Thunderbirds game was played on the new turf at Scotiabank Centre.

“I think there was a lot of good effort all around,” said Accursi. “There’s a lot of guys that were pushing the limits and it makes our decisions that much harder because guys stepped up.”

After the game the fans got to see the new turf up close as the team held an autograph session. Many fans attended the session and were excited to meet the players and coaching staff after an intense first game in their new home arena.

“This exceeded everybody’s expectations,” said Cody Jamieson. “This was awesome for an exhibition game, to have a turnout like that and to have the fans be so into the game that they were chanting, that really made it a fun atmosphere. It’s going to be really exciting to come here for a home game.”

Halifax Thunderbirds set to make National Lacrosse League debut on Saturday

The Canadian Press

Cody Jamieson has played lacrosse his whole life, including suiting up for the Knighthawks the past nine years in Rochester, N.Y. Now he gets to show Halifax what the sport he loves is all about.

The Halifax Thunderbirds make their National Lacrosse League debut on Saturday as they host the expansion New York Riptide. The Knighthawks moved to Halifax in the off-season and were renamed the Thunderbirds while retaining most of their roster — including Jamieson — from last season.

"The fans are raw, there isn't a lot of lacrosse out here in general and there definitely isn't professional lacrosse," said Jamieson on Friday. "The lacrosse fans that come are going to be seeing a National Lacrosse League game for the first time, so it's going to be exciting for them.

"For the people who aren't really lacrosse fans but are just coming because they want to give it a shot, I think they'll be pleasantly surprised with how fun attending a game really is."

Jamieson is a critical part of the Thunderbirds offence, racking up 255 goals and 449 assists since being drafted out of Syracuse University by the Knighthawks in 2011. He hopes that fans in Halifax will be enticed by the atmosphere at Scotiabank Centre for NLL games.

"The National Lacrosse League is a tough league to explain because it's so different than every other sporting event that's out there," said Jamieson. "We play music during the game, it's kind of a party, and you're encouraged to stand up and you're encouraged to have fun."

Professional lacrosse players understand that most people aren't familiar with their sport, so they put in extra work as ambassadors of the game. To that end, Jamieson and teammate Luc Magnan left their homes in Southern Ontario two days ahead of the home opener to tour schools in the Halifax area and educate children about the rules and history of the sport.

Magnan, who grew up in Pine Falls, Man., far from the traditional lacrosse hotbeds of British Columbia's Lower Mainland and Ontario's Golden Horseshoe, understands the importance of that outreach.

"Coming from a small town where lacrosse wasn't as popular and having that opportunity to give back and grow the game in an area like Halifax, it's pretty cool," said Magnan, a defenceman. "I can only imagine what my younger self would have done to have something like this.

"It's pretty cool to be on this side of things and to give back to the game that's given so much to me."

Curt Styres, a Mohawk businessman from Six Nations, Ont., bought the Rochester Knighthawks in 2008. After owning the team for a decade, Styres announced he would move the franchise to Halifax and rename it the Thunderbirds after a legendary creature to many Indigenous peoples. Pegula Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the NFL's Buffalo Bills and NHL's Buffalo Sabres, bought the intellectual property rights to the Knighthawks name and is operating a new franchise in Rochester.

Jamieson, a nephew of Styres who is also from Six Nations, is pleased to see greater First Nations representation in a sport that was created by the Iroquois people.

"Lacrosse is born with us, it's in our creation story from when life first began here on Earth," said Jamieson. "Lacrosse has always been a huge part of our people so having Curt own a professional lacrosse team is a dream come true not only for him and for me, but for all Native Americans. It's at the pinnacle of what could be."

A groupon for those interested. Upper Bowl Adult seats for $15 for a couple games.

It'll ask for your ZIP code at one point. Type your postal code in all caps and no spaces. B3K5X5 for example.

Thunderbirds crash Saddledome party, add to Roughnecks' frustration
TODD SAELHOF Updated: January 25, 2020

It was billed as the East Coast Kitchen Party.

And the celebration was on at the Saddledome until the Halifax Thunderbirds somehow crashed the affair.

The T-Birds threw everything at the Calgary Roughnecks — including the kitchen sink — in dancing their way to a 15-12 victory before 15,362 fans Saturday night at the Saddledome.

A third-quarter barrage of nine goals — and 11 of the 13 scored from late in the second quarter through to early in the final frame — by the party-crashers sunk the Roughnecks, who’ve now dropped all three games at home in the 2019-20 National Lacrosse League season.

Watch the tying goal at the 8:50 mark of the highlight video where Halifax makes it 15-15 with only a few seconds left. 8,833 fans at Scotiabank Centre erupt, what an atmosphere last night!
Too bad they lost in a crazy overtime.

NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE AND TSN ANNOUNCE LANDMARK MULTI-YEAR PARTNERSHIP FOR CANADA

Quote:
First-of-Its-Kind Partnership for Lacrosse Includes Both Linear Television and Live Streaming Coverage of NLL Games

JULY 8, 2021

PHILADELPHIA and TORONTO, July 8, 2021 – The National Lacrosse League (@NLL), the largest and most successful professional lacrosse property in the world, today announced a historic partnership with TSN, Canada’s Sports Leader, to bring games to Canadians across broadcast and live streaming platforms for the first time since 2016. The new agreement is the league’s most comprehensive Canadian broadcast partnership in its 35-year history, and marks the next in a series of major steps the league has taken in recent months as it moves towards returning to play on December 3, 2021.

The multi-year media rights partnership between the NLL and TSN includes exclusive rights to the regular season “NLL Game of the Week,” as well as comprehensive playoff action, including the NLL Championship Series. TSN also delivers NLL coverage to TSN and TSN Direct subscribers through live streaming on its digital platforms, TSN.ca and the TSN app. Schedule details and additional content information will be announced in the coming months. The 2021-22 NLL season begins the weekend of December 3 with 14 teams, five of which are based in Canada.

“As one of our new owners, Wayne Gretzky, reminded people a few weeks ago when we launched our new franchise in Las Vegas, box lacrosse is the national summertime sport of Canada, and we couldn’t be more pleased and eager to bring the NLL back to Canadian fans with TSN, the country’s premier sports network,” said NLL Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz. “This partnership will give us the ability to distribute NLL games to even more fans than ever before and showcase our amazing athletes, coaches, and action that so many Canadians love so dearly and have enjoyed in person.”

“Box lacrosse is an exciting, fast-paced sport, and we are very proud to partner with the NLL to grow the game and bring comprehensive live coverage to Canadian viewers throughout the season,” said Nathalie Cook, VP, TSN and RDS. “The NLL is a significant addition to our live sports schedule, one we know our fans will enjoy for years to come, and we’re excited to deliver expansive coverage, both on and off the floor, to spotlight the league’s talented players.”

This is great news for what I consider the best sports entertainment in Halifax. I just hope TSN does not use this to only show Toronto Rock games. I also hope that the government of the day does not squash the 21/22 season with oppressive COVID-19 restrictions.
