Even though there are actually a lot of subsidized housing in this neighbourhood, I can specifically identify five that have pretty much directly contributed to ruining this area at a much faster pace in recent years after their inception:
1. Drug shoot-up centre at Helmcken & Seymour (Aids Vancouver Building).
2. The Gathering Place CC at Helmcken & Seymour.
3. The Luggat Lodging (formerly Howard & Johnson Hotel) at Granville and Davie.
4. The Murray Hotel at Hornby & Helmcken.
5. Metson Shelter at Howe & Helmcken.
A block south, as well as Granville Street, there are countless other shelters/subsidized housing locations both provincial and municipal governments have squeezed into this stretch of downtown. Without a system to actually get the people these places house to become better productive citizens, I'm afraid we won't be seeing an improvement of this neighbourhood.
Walking around these days, there are significantly more riff raffs and drug addicts, with many looking and behaving like thugs and criminals.
8X is still a new building, but given time it will see its share of problems, like cars in parkade getting broken into, smashed windows at the retail units, graffiti along the walls in the alleyway, etc.
