BIG Joins the Supertall Ranks in China with Rockefeller Center-Inspired Tower

Rose Rock Group, founded by Steven C. Rockefeller Jr., Steven C. Rockefeller III, and Collin C. Eckles, held a ceremonial groundbreaking on December 16, 2011 and is promoting the new tower as a key to transforming Tianjin into “the financial center of Northern China.”

Renderings show a terraced pyramidal tower with a palpable vertical thrust and clear reference to the Art-Deco stylings of its inspiration, the Rockefeller Center in New York. Just as the Rockefellers built ambitiously skyward in New York 80 years ago, Ingels said in a statement, “The Rose Rock International Finance Center will be to the contemporary Chinese city what the Rockefeller Center was to the American city of the 1930s: an architectural landscape of urban plazas and roof gardens designed to stimulate and cultivate the life between the buildings.” Only this time, over a thousand feet higher.

Wow...seems like everyone's getting a supertall.
Wish they had made the top into a point though cause it looks almost like a mountain with a clump at the top.

Good Lord. ANOTHER near-megatall for the city of Tianjin.

At first, I thought I was looking at another render for China Tower 117, but this is a new one altogether, and a better design (IMO) than the former which was designed by the P&T Group.

This one is only about 40 feet shorter than Tower 117; why not go for Tianjin's tallest?

Hope to see this BIG boy get going soon!

We have known about this supertall for several years but not the final design until now.

It's very impressive, in that it seems about right for it's height. A lot of proposals in this range don't really seem as tall.

BUBBLE! Half the cities in China have 'proposals' for 1,500'+ structures... there is no way most of these get built.

With that little caveat, the design for this is AMAZING! This is how I would like to see a 2,000' building look in NYC, it's extremely Gotham... fantastic building!

Wow, i like the first rendering but then it looks odd that the setbacks go all the way to the ground.
I feel it would be way better if the setbacks started half or 2/3rds of the way up.

I was lucky enough to visit the Copenhagen offices of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), while on a trip to Denmark on August 12th. In the beautiful, converted warehouse space that is their office, they had many conceptual models of the Rose Rock IFC. I asked BIG's PR director about the status of the project, and she told me that it has been put on indefinite hold due to financial difficulties. She also said that doing projects in China is very hard for BIG, because of all the bureaucracy and red tape.
I hope Rose Rock gets revived again, it is a stunning design I would love to see it completed.

BTW, I took numerous pictures of BIG's offices and models, including pictures of the Rose Rock IFC models, but I will not upload or distribute them because they might contain information about the confidential design competitions that they are submitting too (Over 75% of all BIG's work comes from competitions).

THis is the same firm, FYI, that designed Calgary's new Telus Sky and the Pyramid at the end of 57th Street in NYC.
