Higherpower yoga, cycling studio to open in South Market District

Quote:
Higherpower, which focuses on a mix of yoga and cycling classes, already has a studio in Mid-City near City Park.

The new location will be open in The Beacon, the third mixed-use building under construction in the South Market District being developed by The Domain Cos. off Loyola Avenue in the Central Business District.
Is all the space leased in the Paramount? I thought there were two restaurant spaces still available.

there was supposed to be one space left but it appears the company burger took it as well to make for a larger restaurant.

FEMA awards SUNO an additional $82 million in Disaster Recovery Grants

Quote:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) an additional $82 million in disaster recovery grants, as announced by U.S. Congressman Cedric Richmond Thursday, July 23. The funding will allow SUNO to construct four new buildings—two on its Lake Campus and two on its Park Campus.

The two new Lake Campus buildings will be the Millie M. Charles School of Social Work Building and the Education Building. Ground-breaking will start with the School of Social Work within the next few months.

The two new buildings on the Park Campus will replace the Clark Building, which already has been demolished, and the Multi-Purpose Building, which will be demolished at a later date. The two new facilities will be the Natural Sciences Building, and the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Building.

As always, thanks for the exhaustive research and great pics Tennis. It's great to see plans moving forward for a real transit hub in the city. It's been needed for a long time. One of my friends that relies on transit as she can't drive due to occasional seizures will definitely appreciate a nice air conditioned and dry spot to wait for her bus in. If they have a small snack stand, or at least some vending machines...all the better.

Thanks for the words of appreciation.

As for the transit center ,I'm leaning towards the Basin Street option as the best. It's best location to fit everything bus wise . And it's not going to interrupt flow on sidewalks .

Great pics Tennis. Thanks.
I though the WWII construction was actually the hotel that was planned, not the garage?
Also construction underway on the new non-profit building in Lee Circle.

No the hotel will be the other half of that block ... This is just the garage ... I think the hotel will start once the garage is done so that the museum has parking capacity at all times.
Its sad how many WW2 vets we lose a day, so the museum really wants to get the whole facility done while we still have some vets left.

According to statistics released by the Veteran's Administration, our World War II vets are dying at a rate of approximately 492 a day. This means there are approximately only 855,070 veterans remaining of the 16 million who served our nation in World War II.

Also we finally have permits issued for 1031 Canal Street!!!!

I want to echo the thanks for all of the photos and updates! I think 1031 will improve that area and hopefully spur some additional development along Rampart. I imagine that construction will start once the streetcar work at that corner winds down a bit.

As for the transit center, I'm surprised they didn't consider Elk Place between Canal and Tulane, as that would connect most directly to the streetcar and bus lines. I agree Basin would be the best option of those being considered.

Do we know what Tracage will look like? I can't remember among all of the different revisions it had to go through.

It will be exciting to see what comes of the Piazza proposals. I'm hoping that new tallest rumor is true!

Ace from above. Not a great shot but the best I could do with my phone. The rooftop pool was finished a couple of weeks ago.

Beacon from above. Also the rear of the 600 block Baronne St mentioned earlier.

Next to the Kingsley house. Unfortunately the picture is now 2 months old but I hadn't seen anyone post updates since.

Re: Transit Center

I might be wrong but it appears, in the articles I've seen, that the "Elk Place" proposal is actually on South Rampart St. This is odd because Elk Place is the name of Loyola/Basin St. between Tulane and Canal. What I was saying is that they should consider a transit center on the actual Elk Place neutral ground, which is a bit wider than the Basin St. neutral ground.

Yeah the location was off ... But I think Basin Street is a better location for the different lines that run through the cbd

Looks like the Canal St. Hotel (old Days Inn) has been purchased, and will be returned to commerce as a hotel in 2017. No mention if it will be an independent hotel, or be branded.

Years ago, before the hotel property was run down, the problem was mainly tourists getting mugged when leaving the hotel and going to the Quarter.

Is the crime at that part of Canal less than it was in the 1980s?

Yeah, the problem with the Canal St Hotel is not just the ass-ugly design or the crime, but the fact that you're right up against the I-10 viaduct. If they build a tower, presumably the lower levels would be parking and hotel guests wouldn't have cars driving right past their window.

However, I think some clever design could fix this problem. I really hope the new hotel goes for a total gut and re-cladding. It could be a really great, eye-popping sleek design along the highway to bookend with the Cancer Research Center and LSU Hospital. Maybe put some kind of large sculpture or signage element on the roof like Crystal Preserves has.
