I like those massive plaza's because you can have special events there like a concert!

Most plaza's aren't all that affective in generating "activity." They are good passing through, but people tend to stay away from open windswept areas. Although there are a few exceptions. Daley Plaza in Chicago is very popular in the summertime during certain hours.

Actually.... many plaza in front of government buildings are better than those in front of a typical corporate office building. You only see these plazas busy during coming/going and lunchtimes. Government buildings tend to have activity throughout the day and are better at converging the public since they carry fewer restrictions on what the public can do. Not to mention, cities like to organize events in these spaces.

But in general, I'd probably still disagree with you that they are a good component of design (at least nowadays.)

If you want effective gathering spaces, I'd shoot for smaller scale like the new General Motors Promenade in Detroit, which is one of my top 20 favorite public spaces in the US, not to mention.... it's always busy.

Basically for plazas to work in this day and age I reckon youd have to:

1. Face them with stone - noones going to be attracted by a (dated) and cheap concrete expanse.

2. Also to enjoy the expanse you'd need focal points, not just statues but the buildings surrounding these places need to be beautiful, or at least stimulating. You don't see people hanging round box retail stores do you?

3. An added onus bonus, people need a further 'excuse' to make the trek there, not to just do nothing but enjoy a space. Shops, bars, cinemas, theatres, art. It needs to become a social destination. People tend to linger in places by default, not by pure intent.

4. Lastly a place to sit down - cafes, benches, trees providing shade. It's no point doing all this for people to only pass from one building to another.

Thats what i think they should do with the spire's plaza. they should put a starbucks there or something.

^^^ Seriously? A starbucks? I don't think anyone wants a starbucks there and I don't think Starbucks is in a position to locate there. Also, as a resident of the tower, why would you want public stores near the base of you building, it will only encourage more tourists to come and hang out and drink coffee.

this building is nice. but i do have to admit, it did leave me feeling a little cold... an argument i hear all too often against modernism, though in this case, i would tend to agree.

...then again, that part of essen is really cold and dead anyway, so it also fits right in...

If I lived in the spire I would love it!
I dont know about you but I drink alot of coffee and it would be nice to just get up and get a coffee with just a small trip down the elevator. Just to sit down have a coffee and gaze at the spire! I bet the store would make alot of money!

Right, who cares if a gust of wind blows a helicopter a few feet, chopping innocent building occupants to tiny bits by rogue chopper blades and dooming the lives of those inside the helicopter? I really hope that's just the angle. The helipad is probably(hopefully) not actually in the middle of the circle, but attached to the side closest to the camera. The other pictures look a bit too vague to see it properly.
