Kite to build 2 hotels at Pan Am Plaza; city to spend $120M on attached meeting space

https://www.capitalimprovementboard....Renderings.pdf

Quote:
Indianapolis’ once-celebrated-but-now-underused Pan Am Plaza is the planned site of a $120 million, publicly funded addition to the Indiana Convention Center plus two privately funded Hilton-branded hotels that together would have more than 1,400 rooms.

The Capital Improvement Board voted on Friday to recommend construction of the convention center expansion and to work with Kite Realty Group Trust as the master developer on the project.

The resolution gives the CIB authority to work on a project agreement with Kite and an overall financing model.

The Kite plan was one of three submitted in March in response to the CIB’s request for proposals for another convention-style hotel with 800 to 1,000 rooms.

Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration has endorsed the Kite plan.

A key component of the project is a 38-story, 800-room hotel that would be developed by Kite and branded as Hilton on the northeast corner of the plaza at Illinois and Georgia streets. It would be Indianapolis’ second-largest hotel, behind only the 1,005-room JW Marriott that opened in 2011.

Kite plans to build a second, 600-room hotel, as well, which would be on the southeast corner of the block at Illinois and Louisiana streets. It also would carry a Hilton brand.

Kite would oversee the construction of the ballroom building, as well, but wouldn’t own it. Indianapolis-based RATIO Architects is the architect on the project.

The project would involve tearing down the underground parking structure, building a podium to support the two-story ballroom and additional meeting space, as well as general property acquisition costs, Cook said. The city also would build the climate-controlled walkway over Capitol Avenue to connect the Indiana Convention Center with the new complex.

The city hopes to win approvals for the project within 12 months, setting the stage for groundbreaking in 2019. The construction is expected to take multiple years, but officials said it would not interfere with activity at the convention center.

Congratulations Indy

OH my has a high rise been preposed for Indianapolis? is it true? I am an
Architect and skyscraper enthusiast and I have been reviewing posts on this website for a number of years and have never seen any other proposals for Indianapolis. Congratulations Indianapolis and welcome to the skyscraper party. I have marveled at the fact that the American cities not counted in say the top 10 or 12 cities just have not been building big projects since before the Great Recession. Indy hasn’t built big in a long while. Indy’s last skyscraper was built in the early 90’s .......and that is a long time ago.......I recently pointed that fact out to my daughter in an effort to try and steer her interests away from that area because they just don’t build any big projects there (as a barometer for their economic health and willingness and ability to change and grow). If you’re not growing and changing you are in fact moving backwards and not forward and being left behind.

Most of the development that you see in this site involves the same “usual suspect” top 10 American cities and no one else. I guess that this reflects the current unease in the country of certain regions beleiving that they are being left behind in this great economic arms race. Big development only seems to be happening in big cities only. Even cities like Milwaukee and Baltimore have managed to erect a skyscraper or 2 recently (in say the past 4 years) but no Indianapolis. You can also include other similar cities on the list as well such as Kansas City and St. Louis.

Indy, a city of 700,000 should really build a light rail like all of the other peer cities in its league.

St. Louis hasn't erected any skyscrapers if that's what you're alluding to. If not, then yes. Indianapolis deserves a new tall building in their skyline. The city is growing, I have family there. I like to see the few high-rises that have been built recently but there needs to be dome bugger things.

This is really nice. That balcony up there looks fun. I'd like to see some more renderings showing it in the skyline.

INDIANAPOLIS | Hilton Insignia | FT | 38 FLOORS

Hilton is launching a new hotel brand to cater to large convention centers. The Hilton Insignia will add an additional 800 rooms on Pan Am Plaza in downtown Indianapolis and would eclipse the JW Marriott as the tallest hotel in Indianapolis and the state. Construction is expected to be complete by 2023.

$550 million deal reached for Pan Am Plaza: new hotels and convention center expansion

Plans to build a $550 million hotel at Pan Am Plaza and expand the Indiana Convention Center are a go, but will be delayed up two years. That's after the city and the Kite Realty Group signed off on a development deal, according to Capital Improvement Board (CIB) Executive Director Andy Mallon.

Plans ultimately call for two new Hilton hotels (the first a 40-story Signia hotel) with a combined 1,400 rooms.

Great to see this one move forward and hope it moves forward as designed. It's a really nice edition to the Indy skyline, and should have a pretty profound impact. The article says it is already under construction. Any eyes on the ground that can verify?
