Post Niagara-On-The-Lake: One of Canada's prettiest towns

Located at the mouth of the Niagara River and incorporated as a town in 1792, Niagara-On-The-Lake was once the capital of Upper Canada and was the site of many battles in the War of 1812. Today, with the Shaw Festival theatre, historic sites, and Niagara Falls and many wineries nearby, it is a major tourist destination. The town makes a great effort to live up to its reputation as one of Canada's prettiest towns and has a considerable collection of well-kept early 19th century Georgian and Neo-Classical architecture.

Boy you weren't kidding when you said, "One of Canada's prettiest towns"! It really looks very nice. I don't think you could have taken these photos on a better day. The grass is green, the flowering trees & ground flowers are at their peak, and the sun is out! It's nice to see communities with residents who take such great pride in creating great places to work, live, & play.

Your timing was perfect with the spring blossoms really adding to the pics. I know the place is touristy, but still it is a jewel of a town. Great to see.

I should have noted that many Loyalists settled in Niagara-on-the-Lake, bringing housing styles with them from the eastern US. I think it would be more proper to say the style of many of the houses is Classical Revival rather than Neoclassical. I'll save the term Neoclassical for houses incorporating Classical elements built later (into the 20th C). NOTL has these too though, and lots of faux historicism as well. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether buildings are new or old here.

Strange, I was just thinking about Niagara-On-The-Lake before I logged onto the computer. I went there a few summers ago. Beautiful area.

what a great lil' town.

I dig the stone condos which appropriately seemed to pay their respects to a previous era of construction materials. I also dig the LCBO and how they managed to fit in quite nicely.

great work.

The longest part of the trip would be the border crossing, it's only a few minutes north of Niagara Falls.

Not really the place for excitement and nightlife, but they do have plays at the Shaw Festival, historic sites and museums like Fort George and if you're a wine connoisseur you'd be in heaven.

Great pictures once again. Niagara-on-the-Lake looks best in the Spring or Summer, when the flowers are out or when the sun is shining bright. I love going there, but have only been able to do a small phototour myself. I plan on going back again for more pictures.

As with other places along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers unobstructed views of Toronto. I'm surprised that you didn't try to get it in a picture. Was the visibility bad, or did you run out of time or something?
