Today's Ålesund shows the reconstruction efforts from a 1904 fire that destroyed the town centre. Adopting an Art Nouveau style, the architectural work was heavily influenced by the German Jugendstil movement but complemented with local folklore additions.

First stop is the park at Mount Aksla, which was built in 1885. You can drive up from the city or hike up a 418-step staircase. The public terrace offers a panoramic view of the city at the edge of a peninsula and surrounded by water and islands.







Back at sea level, explore the town centre and all its Art Nouveau on foot.

Looks like various flavours of licorice. The pink one labelled "jorbaer" is strawberry.
