Looks like Calgary has the lowest rate amongst the bigger Canadian prairie cities as usual. 19 seems pretty high for the city though. Wasn't it around 6 murders last year or the year before? What's changed there? Increased gang activity related to the drug trade, prostitution, something else? Or is it related to an increase in domestic incidents?

19 is not high at all. That's only around 1.7/100k. Very low. We had a really good year in 2012 is all.

I thought Canada's murder capital was Prince George?

Well Prince George is not nearly as big as Winnipeg or Surrey as it has a cma population of 80,000 or somewhere close to that. While Winnipeg has close to 800,000 cma (10 times more people) , and Surrey is a suburb city of the Vancouver region, but Surrey has like 500,000 people (still about 6 times more people). Also most homicides are from drugs and illegal trade. In Winnipeg's case also involves maybe some intoxicated crime. I don't know about all of Surrey's crime, but I hear the majority is the drug trade.

Quebec City looks like it was 3 for 2013 (0.4 per 100,000 - 766,000)
(excludes a possible murder-suicide on Ile d'Orleans - which should really be part of the city).

Levis (140,000) looks like it is at 0 for 2013 (depending on the latest case).

However, possible murder suicide in Levis (south shore of Québec City) on or around the 1st of Jan, 2014.

yep, 19 is not high in general, but it seemed high for Calgary..but as your comment indicates 2012 was a good year, not a typical year. Didn't know that.

Looks like there was a double murder in the Aylmer district of Gatineau yesterday. A young couple in their 20s. Appears to have been drug-related.

A three-year-old girl was left physically unharmed on the premises by the killers.

Rough start to the year as usually we have less than five murders a year here, and some years we have none.

So, I stumbled upon this video the other day while looking at a BC gang blog, and wow! If you live outside of Vancouver/Surrey/Abbotsford/Kelowna, and are curious as to what these gangsters in BC look like, this video is the best representation of them. I'm pretty sure everyone in the video is affiliated with the UN.

It's about 3 years old now, but it's dead on.

Oh, and the first minute has some oscar-caliber acting.

There are a lot of DBs who look this here or try to. But we only have a few murders a year in the area and those are almostalways drug related or crimes of passion.

Only 1 in Toronto so far into 2014.

I don't know what they've done in Toronto since 2009 but it's working pretty good.

This is Toronto's Homicide numbers since '04

2004 - 64
2005 - 80
2006 - 70
2007 - 84
2008 - 70
2009 - 63
2010 - 63
2011 - 50
2012 - 54
2013 - 56

Being from South Africa, even Prince George seems like a low number. The country as a whole is between 30-50/100k depending which source you believe (government vs. international agencies). I've never found myself too scared to go out at night in any part of Canada as random violence is extremely rare, even in the higher crime areas of the country. Ironically, the only time I've ever been a victim of random violence was in Oakville of all places.

Thunder Bay is now at 1: Second-degree murder charge laid, a 35-year-old man is dead after being attacked by a 38-year-old woman. Another local news source says they were in a relationship.

Nothing but a bunch of meat head douchebags. The scary thing about these guys is they are trying to form ties with the Cartels in Mexico (and a bunch of these clowns have wound up dead down there).

The HA out of BC have a pretty good relationship with some of the cartels. It's the up-and-comers like the UN and Red Scorpions that have been getting murdered at an alarming rate. Waaaay over their heads down there.

What's so strange about all of this, to me anyway, is that this is my generation. I honestly went to school with guys that do this stuff now. When I go back home, I'll see the odd one or two, and have a conversation and beer with them.

So many gangster and wannabe gangsters in south BC now. It's mind-boggling how out of control it's gotten.

Ottawa had it's first one on Wednesday in a new development in south Barrhaven. Including the drug-related double-murder in Aylmer earlier this month, it's already 3 for the NCR
