Nature is never too far away. Half an hour by ferry from the city is serene Lamma Island. While tourists frequent the guidebook-recommended walk between the 2 main towns, other trails seem to have been forgotten. You can enjoy the beach and hillsides all to yourself.

Tai Lam Chung Reservoir was built in 1951 with a dam that has created a number of small islets nicknamed the "thousand islands". Reaching the viewpoint is quite easy along Section 10 of the MacLehose Trail, about 1.5 hours from the nearest town, So Kwun Wat.

Wang Chau has appeared on the news over the years as the government tried to turn the village and nearby brownfield sites into a residential area. Disagreements over compensation or relocation with villagers over the expropriation have kept bulldozers away. Meanwhile, there is a hiking trail through the hills here that lead to a wide lookout point facing the agricultural lands in this part of the city as well as Shenzhen in the background.

Shenzhen's skyline rises behind the water.

While the route was not overly steep up until this point, although sandy and rocky, the last ascent up Kai Shan is more difficult and may need some scrambling. Again, the path is well-trodden but not paved but this stretch is worth it for the ultimate view of the city and China.

The Long Valley wetlands are popular with migratory birds and with agriculture's revival, birds are returning in larger numbers. Some 200 bird species frequent this area, and conservationists have long called for the government to establish a nature park in this part of Sheung Shui near the border. The area caught the public's attention in 2000 when the railway company planned to build the Lok Ma Chau spur line right through here, and subsequent objections forced the line to move underground.

fantastic photos mate. I have yet to make it to Hong Kong, though sadly now doesn't seem like the optimal time to go there.

The 4-star Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay closed its doors in March 2019 after 46 years of service. Its owners, the Mandarin Oriental group, had initially tried to sell the hotel but was unsuccessful. The 869-room hotel building will be torn down and a new 26-storey office tower will take its place. The location is unique, allocated as Lot No. 1, the first piece of land auctioned off in 1841.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) opened their Hong Kong campus at the renovated North Kowloon Magistracy in 2010. Able to accommodate 1500 students each year, the school was formerly a court for minor offences between 1960 and 2005.

SCAD is an art, design, and digital media university from the United States. Founded in 1978, the Hong Kong campus is its first in Asia, offering courses in advertising, animation, graphic design, illustration, interactive design and game development, motion media design, photography, and visual effects.
