^ also because there is literally no reason for them to leave the great lakes. all they do is move the ore around. that is their job!

no, but we stayed at the hotel pictured at the foot of the aerial bridge. so we had waterfront patio views of the bridge and boats going by all the time.

it was a very nice place -- they have jacuzzi bathtubs lol.

That's not entirely accurate.

Yes, many of the big boats spend the entire careers bringing taconite from lake superior down to the steel Mills in the lower lakes, but great lakes bulk carriers haul lots of other bulk cargoes too, stone, coal, grain, etc.

As there are no major US ports on lake Ontario or the st. Lawrence, the American fleets has never been as concerned about their ships fitting through the locks, but the Canadian fleets consist entirely of freighters that can get through the locks, because lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence are vitally important to them.

of course i was speaking historically, but i'm sure there is much more taxiing of other materials these days all around as the big steel manufacturing era has passed and the great lakes fleet is like a third of what it was in 1980.

Once again, not really accurate.

There is still crap load of taconite delivered via lake freighters to the 3 big integrated steel mills in NW Indiana (IH, GW & BH), where ~75% of the nation's raw steel is still made.

And the US great lakes fleet is smaller in terms of number of ships than it was decades ago, but a large part of that equation is that the thousand footers can carry multiple times more cargo than the freighters of yore. A 70,000 ton load of taconite that can now be carried by a single thousand-footer used to take 3 - 4 conventionally sized ore boats back in the day.

^ no, the handful 1000'fter ore ships were all active in 1980. so was much more steel production and almost 2/3 more jobs. and yes as i mentioned the overall working fleet is much, much smaller. if you have ever lived near the great lakes its very visible that it is over time.

Now this is my City

Thanks for capturing Duluth in all ways. We're on 10% of the world's fresh water clinging toughly to the largest rock in North America (the Canadian Shield). I can 't wait to post my own City. Hint, it's built brick by brick.

The North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Canada is one of my favorite areas in the U.S. The Minnesota State Parks along the way have so many awesome hiking opportunities, waterfalls and Lake Superior scenery, etc. One of my favorite places is Gooseberry Falls.

I did not realize how steep the residential areas look from the center of town.

Look at the wave lines on the beach I know the water level is back to normal but that didn’t make those!

The real north shore no doubt.

One of my favorite small cities hands down historic grand architecture, dense, historic high-rises, mountains, coast & with the city in-between what not to love. If not for the winter and freeway along the shore 10/10 paradise.

Unsalted steez .. had the itch for a few years now to hit up out Mt Bohemia gotta get some new gear anyways idk if I got the same kind of dedication as those same those legendary dudes n chicks. Wouldn’t be too much of a detour to hit up black rocks or the north shore while I’m at it .. after getting some practice sets under my belt

I went to a bike race in Duluth. It was a good time. George Thorogood played in the street. The Beaver Brown band also.
