Anyone know what's happening with the MMF and the former Bank of Montreal at Portage and Main? They were supposed to announce a winner of the design contest in October but there has been nothing heard since. Is there anything happening in the building itself?

If I remember correctly, Barley Bros only closed because Lot 88 paid them to take over the location. I heard there was something sketchy about Earls management or something that forced them to close in the first place though? Having trouble remembering, but I thought it was something sketchy. That Earls closed in the first place was weird because it was always packed, what with Uni students/staff and Fort Gary/Fort Richmond people nearby looking for a faux-riche place for drinks and mid-range food (I'm kidding- it's actually not bad and they have great drink specials at happy hour!)

As I typed this, I realized most of my sources are speculative and anecdotal at best, lol...

I don't think I've seen that one, but isn't that where the potential Skip the Dishes buildings would have gone? It looks like it would fit the description we got last year.

That was the proposed Skip The Dishes building before they chose Tru North Square.

I heard from someone that seemed to be in the know many years back that the Pembina Earls had a significant revenue drop once the St Vital location opened. Add in that St Vital was running the newer format and the cost to bring Pembina up to current standards. It all factored in the closure. I think I one point there may have been talk of a new location near Kennaston and McGillavary as a relocation of sorts for the Pembina one.

I seem to recall complaints about very high rent as well.

Really consistent work happening on the RWB site. They were pouring concrete last week and there is a decent sized telescopic crawler crane on site today.

It was rumored to be roughly a 20ish floor apartment tower.
Hopefully main floor retail spots for a cafe & a few stores

because all the empty storefront next door and across the street are full? the desire for ground level street level retail is desired when theres demand, but there's dozens spots to fill.

That’s happening all over the city and all over the world now. You don’t build it for today, you build it for tomorrow. Besides, no one is building street level residences right on Portage Ave, so what do you propose? A blank wall with nothing to offer the sidewalk? Cmon.

Looks like the perfect spot for an apartment block; I hope it goes forward.

Yeah, wow. Definitely more so than I would have expected for that site. Looks like it will have great presence, and I love how it is oriented. I was envisioning something more like the U of W's Downtown Commons, so this is a nice surprise.

If it gets built, I really hope that it puts some wind into the sails of the general surroundings. It would be nice to see some of the vacant retail spaces get occupied, maybe trigger a building renovation or two.

Good stuff... thanks DonaldSmith.
