The WTC complex will still draw its massive numbers because of the memorial, shopping, and just the awesomeness of it alone. The rest of Midtown will continue to be midtown, only enhanced by the coming changes, including the area around Grand Central. But the Hudson Yards throws something
new into the mix, an extra layer of awesomeness to the whole city. As amazing as it is to watch the WTC being rebuilt, and the transformation of Midtown north (and east) with some of the city's tallest towers, those are already well established locations.
The Hudson Yards, and in particular Related's massive plaza which will be fed by both the High Line and Hudson Blvd Parks, the shops, the observation deck, will add a whole new dimention to the Big Apple experience. But Ross believes it's the massive (and secretive) sculpture that will be unveiled for the plaza that will capture the spirit of the city, a new icon that will be to New York what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. I don't find that hard to believe either.
It will be the centerpiece of the plaza, visible in many directions as you approach the site.
We are used to the great complexes and cultural institutions of the city as they exist. We haven't witnessed as much their creation. But now we are witnessing a lot of what will be known as the new New York - all over the city. Things that the next generation, and generations after that will take for granted, we are seeing get built right now. And that is something amazing and special.
