Very Impressive Malec.

Really gives a person a new appreciation for how substantial this will look when complete.

What's up with the low cost of construction in dubai?

"Currently occupied by the 323m tall Q1 Tower on Australia’s Gold Coast, the emirate was supposed to be inheriting the title sometime in 2009 following completion of the Princess Tower. Standing at 107 stories and 414m tall, the US $188 million (AED690 million) project, developed by Tameer Holdings with ACC as the main contractor, is universally considered to be the holder in waiting."

Is it simply due to the wage-per-worker ratio? Towers in the United States seem to cost much more than that. An visionary tower in St. Louis (81 stories) was estimated to cost around 600 mil. U.S. What's with the huge discrepancy? It also seems construction proceedes much faster in Dubai as well. Any input would be great.

(Back on thread)
Instant skyline is correct. You cannot help but be impressed with the scale of the developments in the region right now. Is demand beggining to show signs of a cooling off period yet? It seems like the market in Dubai is becoming very saturated with residential space.

One final question... how far is Dubai Marina located from the main downtown district (Burj Dubai)?

Yes cheap labour is a reason. However no way in hell will it cost that little. Dubai developers have a habit of being way too optimistic with costs and deadlines. Every single tower in Dubai is at least 6 months late.
I imagine a conversation between a developer and contractor would go something like this:

Developer: So, how much will this whole thing cost?
Contractor: It will cost $500 million and take about 4 years to build.
Developer: Make it cost $200 million! Have it done in 2 years as well.
Contractor: But...
Developer: No buts, just do it.
5 years down the line
Developer: I thought you said it would cost $200 million?
Contractor: Aaaaaarrrrrrggggg!!

Insane development but what is with those hideous square podiums at the base of each of the towers. Is this a design feature mandated by the city? There needs to be some variation.

^^ Mostly parking. Underground parking is expensive in Dubai because of problems with water, that's the reason why the towers at SZR have seperate carparks at the back. Some towers still have underground parking though, especially the massive ones with lots of units like princess tower.
All those podiums will be attatched to each other and eventually a mall will be built in between the row where marina 101 is and the one behind it where the pentominium is.
I don't think it's mandatory that all towers have shops at the base though, some definitely will have them but not all, most of the public facilities will be at the water's edge anyway.

Updates of the torch:

Major sections of shear walls are visible within the slip form.

The bottom right of the photo shows the rebar ready for the casting of the top the water tank. Since this photo was taken 2 days ago this has now been complete. Some of the major columns and Shear walls are visible here already cast for the support of the first car parking level.

Rebar continue to flow onto the construction site to keep up with the accelerated work of the columns and core of the building.

First level of the car park cast visible cover about a third of the total basement area. The red steel frame work is the sliding form work, which give s a template for the main core structure of the building and will follow all the way to the top of the building as each floor is cast.

Major reinforcement being worked on for above the first level of the car parking floors.

Sections of spare crane on site for when the cranes need elevating further.

First floor of the car parking level being prepared for casting. Each of the car park floors are 345mm thick reinforced concrete. This will also provide the under cover area for the workers to take shade that becomes a necessity in the summer.

Updates of 23 marina:

Wow, this is like Shanghai, but ALOT faster! Looks lovely, the only part of Dubai I really like! All of these towers look beautiful, have the perfect height, and dont have insanely huge spires like Burj. Marina is gonna be beautiful when its done!

Princess Tower, foundation will be poured soon.

3D model almost finished, only 2 towers left to go. Marina pinnacle which is not seen in the render below and ocean heights II. To be honest I mightn't even bother doing OH2 since it'd be very very surprising if it gets off the ground.

The ocean heights One tower took an insane amount of time to do because of the weird shape. Every floor had to be done seperately.

Updates. Waiting for main contractor (which is going to take ages!)

WOW. The Dubai Marina has to be one of the most exciting places on earth to watch right now. However, It seems to me as though there is only extremely large height construction in Dubai in general. It doesn't feel as though (through all pictures I have seen) there are any buildings in Dubai that are under 700 feet. Most urban areas have an urban feel because there are skyscrapers mixed with 15 story buildings mixed with 5 story buildings mixed with 60 story buildings. Dubai feels as though there is no variance in the height of their structures until you get above 700 feet. Can anyone from Dubai help me out since I have never been there? Thanks!

Good render of what would be the best tower in the marina if built. Sadly though, I have to give this a 5% chance of actually getting off the ground

Overall Vision - very long video

Here is a 1hr plus video of the Emirate's overall vision (or as he states in the beginning - only 10% of it). Originally found on Skyscrapercity.com, it is not the best quality video, but the images and breadth of the proposals is astounding. The music gets a bit annoying after a while, but you can always mute.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...787416&q=dubai

Enjoy.
