What an ugly store, good riddance. Wish I could attend the demolition

It's going to be a landmark, one way or the other. It will just so happen to rise next to a very cool bridge (336 ft)...

Bowery Boogie:

Extell Begins Demolition of Cherry Street Pathmark Ahead of 68-Story Tower
Posted on: May 2nd, 2014 at 6:03 am by Elie

Quote:
The gears are finally grinding into action down at the Extell Pathmark development site. A tipster sends in word that demolition of the decades-old supermarket began yesterday. And from the look of it, much of the northern facade is already gone. Even though permits for the dismantling had been filed back in late January, it still took a couple months for the DOB approval to come through. Dumpsters are there for the debris; it won’t be long.

Just Looking at that Bridge shot above, I hope they don't build a 547 10th here.

That would be a crime against humanity. A site like this deserves something unique to complement the world famous bridge. On another note, this tower will dominate everything near it. Its good to see Downtown somewhat expanding. First with Beekman, 56 Leonard, now this, it seems that taller towers are sprouting further away from the main highrise/skyscraper cluster.

I was thinking it could be. Seems there will basically be 3 sections to the tower, wich each section slightly smaller as it rises (unless the apartments just become larger). The store itself will be equally underground as much as the first floor.

If you look at the Manhattan Bridge, the building itself will be more than twice as high as the bridge towers. It will be as much an iconic image of New York as the Domino development will be with the Williamsburg Bridge...

Extell Plan on Cherry Street Includes Affordable Housing, Lots of Amenities

By Ed Litvak
April 30, 2014

Quote:
Here’s a bit more information about the large residential and commercial project Extell Development is building on the former site of the Cherry Street Pathmark store. As previously reported, the prolific developer is planning a 68 story tower in the Two Bridges neighborhood. Demolition of the single level store got underway this week.

Last night, Community Board 3 District Manager Susan Stetzer said Extell reps have indicated there will also be a second building on the site. It will contain around 200 units of affordable housing. She told community board members that Extell is now looking at coming to brief the land use committee of CB3 in June regarding the plans. Previous scheduled appearances have been canceled.

Also, more details are available in documents being filed with the Department of Buildings. According to the floor-by-floor plan, quite a lot of space below ground and extending to the fifth floor will include amenities such as retail stores, a basketball court, a bowling alley, “golf simulator room,” sauna and steam rooms, swimming pool, a theater, “dog spa” and various fitness rooms, including a rock climbing room. There is no specific mention of a grocery store to replace the Pathmark. Apartments begin on the 6th floor. There are 13 or 14 units per floor, except on the 68th floor, where 7 larger apartments are planned.

Extell Begins Demolition of Cherry Street Pathmark Building

Quote:
The enormous building will dwarf any other structure in the immediate area and add hundreds of market-rate apartment to the Lower East Side’s residential inventory.

Today workers were on the site beginning to demolish the single-story Pathmark building, which was shuttered at the end of 2012. The windows have been knocked out on the Cherry Street side of the building.

It's two towers, and being built separately. 2019 sounds about right to me (2-3 years for each building).

^Ah ha. But now what doesn't make sense is why they're going to break the project into 2 phases, when the NYC residential market is currently white-hot..

Only one tower is 800ft; the other is smaller and will have the affordable housing component.

Apparently the affordable housing component will be in the smaller tower. Construction will probably overlap.

Extell Slays Lower East Side Pathmark in Pursuit of New Tower

Quote:
Extell's serfs are busy at work at the future site of the company's 68-story Lower East Side tower. For three weeks now the beholden have been deconstructing the former Pathmark—the same inescapable fate the development company's East Harlem Pathmark acquisition will suffer. The lot at 227 Cherry Street is in the company of NYCHA structures the Rutgers Houses. The inbound 787-apartment tower will, by Bowery Boogie's estimation, rise three times as high as its neighbors.
