If you're talking about 35 HY, the "excavation" is the ongoing drilling of the caissons down into the bedrock. For this tower the caissons are being drilled between the LIRR tracks in the NW corner of the East Rail Yard. The NY NY FB photo below MIGHT show the caisson drill nearest the 11th Ave viaduct drilling one of those caissons.

Looking WSW, column assembly on the south side of 33rd street. The 11th Ave. viaduct ~bisects the photo horizontally. 35 HY will go around where the furthest yellow drill and the train at the covered platform are on photo right. You can see that they temporarily shut down a strip of 3? tracks for the caisson drills, white hydraulic crane and associated equipment. I'm also assuming they will demolish the brown roofed train platform to drill caissons for 35 HY columns and then rebuild platform for train maintenance operations.

Meet the New Heart of New York - Joanie!

Quote:
The men and women building Hudson Yards work hard to keep construction of this city within a city humming along. But from time to time, even these intrepid individuals need help with the heavy lifting. That's where Joanie comes in. Since arriving on site in May, Joanie's put in her share of hours hauling thousands of pounds of steel foundation reinforcements and platform superstructure components. Sounds like a lot, but standing at 220 feet high, with a 600 horsepower engine and a max lifting capacity of 660 tons, this red Manitowoc 18000 crane can handle just about anything her operators throw at her. The strongest crane in New York City, Joanie's already hoisted her way into the hearts of all onsite. And after her mention in the September 4th Fortune article, she is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable and popular Hudson Yards team members! #NHNY
And the diagram below is a reminder of where Related hoped HY would be at the end of 2014 (3.5 months left)

I suppose I also was lamenting the transition of shape this tower made in its previous incarnation; but it didn't occur to me till now that the former corset building was essentially tweaked to do the same thing...only to four fused oblong cylinders instead of one.
Now I'm really starting to appreciate how even the oft-maligned box is treated here especially given the more radical forms taken by its three neighbors.

So there will be no excavation, rock blasting or foundation level for this tower ? 35 HY will be constructed on caissons above the rail tracks?

I think its worse than that. A "boring" glass box would have looked better. This version grates on my eyes.

She'll get her NY skyscraper one day.

Ah, but IMHO, that's just it. To somehow compensate for the dumbing down of any deviation from rectilinearity, we see more sensationalistic "giftwrapping". I give you the latest renders for 50H as an example IMO just as interesting as this one.

~300 caissons, mostly finished by end of 2014

Correct.

The excavation is the drilling of those caissons with the yellow caisson drills (there are at least 3 caisson drills in the East Rail Yard) with the vertical masts. The bottoms of the caissons are socketed into the bedrock, which slopes generally downwards (gets deeper) as you get closer to the Hudson River.

The MTA's Patrick Cashin took a bunch of photos ~2 months ago that shows a drilled, but not filled, caisson at the HY site. When he took the photos they (MTA & Tutor-Perini) had not temporarily closed that sorta central stripe of tracks that is presently closed and being used by 3 caisson drills:

7.9.2014

MTA/Patrick Cashin "Construction at Hudson Yards
Giant cranes and boring machines work in tight quarters with the Long Island Rail Road’s 24/7 operations at the LIRR west side storage yard to construct the platform that will support the office towers, apartments and shopping center of a new neighborhood being constructed by the Related Companies at 10th Avenue between 30th and 33rd streets on Manhattan’s west side. Simultaneously a concrete casing as route protection for Amtrak’s future trans-Hudson tunnel is being constructed. Photo: Metropolitan Transportation Authority / Patrick Cashin"
https://www.flickr.com/photos/mtaphotos/14815015813/

You can scroll at the link above to see photos of the 4 drills, closed tracks, construction barriers, THICK steel columns with studs for concrete, etc.. There has been substantial progress in the caisson drilling and overbuild erection since the photos were taken in early July

Another addition to the list of New Yorks new disappointing supertalls. I can't believe they butchered the corset building like that as well. Archictectural innovation seems to be only reserved for New York low rises. If it goes high, it's design is value engineered down.

Steinway Tower is the only hope to maintain a great design until the end...

If by "interesting", you mean horrible, that's just it. Because I put this one in that same class. But again, there have been so many revisions with this tower, who knows what the final product will be. We could likely be looking at further evolution down the line. I only hope it's for the better, because if it's any worse, I rather it didn't get built.

Courtesy of SSC forumer iamtheSTIG, this alternate form was shown at the TimeWarner display, and as can be seen, includes the current form of the Culture/ex-Corset tower:

The form reverts to a morph, adds a beacon and setback; but the cladding is back to meh.
EDIT: Given a more hi-def look, there's more detail on the skin, albeit less than the version than the one with the tapered corner . Also, the beacon looks to consist of a separate setback of its own...and it looks to be surrounded by a ephemeral Bear-Sterns-like crown.

Apparently, the HY team released today a half-ton, 17' model of the complex; and this is all they've uploaded so far.
Based on juxtaposition, I'd dare say that our friend E-Tower seems to have gone thru yet another, rather haphazard shapeshifting frenzy.....

^^
Nah..that has to be the South/Coach tower since it lacks the ob deck plate.
It looks as if the Culture tower's hiding something... .
Besides, if you look at pics of the whole complex, the aforementioned stands directly west to Coach.

So, we're sticking with this version of the tower for now...who knows what we will end up with...
