It is so sad to me to see something of this importance and magnitude to go into disarray.

I keep coming back to this thread. There is something tragic about the ruins of the NYC world fair

1939 World Fair: GM's Futurama was prescient for that which became Dubai.

I totally agree. I've been there twice and it still takes my breath away. The day I took the ones I posted (from this past May) I just felt a presence there. I can't believe that there is no way to bring this back...or enough of an interest to have kept it up. I took these pictures because I'm terrified these items are going to be torn down and forgotten. I certainly hope not!

Curious: Do you know how long it took the 1893 Chicago Ferris Wheel to make one complete revolution?

^ In 'Devil in the White City', I believe I read it took 20 minutes for one revolution of the ferris wheel. There were 6 stops for loading/unloading and then continuous turning for 9 minutes straight during each revolution, or trip.

I forgot about that! (Great book, huh????) Thanks!!

Here are some pictures I took last summer when I revisited Knoxville, TN. I was there in 1982, but wasn't allowed to go up in the needle. I was thrilled last year to do just that! I'm also thrilled that the city of Knoxville found it important to keep this monument around instead of tearing it down (which almost happened!!)

Is it just me or does the Montreal Expo look like Epcot at Disney World...with the tram and all. Did Walt Disney design this one, too?

Love the legacy shots of NYC & Knoxville. I agree that Philip Johnson's NY State pavilion is fantastic and should be salvaged if possible (already an extant group dedicated to this, I think.....)

The 1982 Knoxville World's Fair - I keep forgetting about that one - those shots were a nice surprise.

Montreal '67 Expo wasn't designed by Disney, but the 1964-65 NYC World's Fair had four Disney-designed pavilions.

1893 Chicago WF

wrab...or anyone else....which park in Chicago is the one that was the site for the World's Fair?? It wasn't Grant Park was it? Was anything left or was it all destroyed in the fire? Also, do they have markings or pictures (anything?) there that shows where things were and what they looked like? I wasn't sure since there was such a scandal AND there was a 2nd later on.

It's been a couple of years since I read the book and it wasn't mine, so I can't go back and look when I have questions. And now that I have this forum I'm just full of questions for people who actually have the answers!!

Thanks everyone! (Glad you like the pics)

Hey there!
This is my first post, but I wanted you to know how much I appreciate this forum as well as the LA-NOIR forum. My day wouldn't be complete without a visit.

I also appreciated the photos from EXPO 70. I visited that fair with my family when my father was stationed in Japan during Viet Nam. ILL NEVER FORGET IT.

Very symbolic that the last photo in the series was of the Swiss Pavilion, as that was the last exhibit we visited.

Thanks again!

Jackson Park was where the majority of the 1893 World's Exhibition was located. The 1933 Exhibition was centered around an area currently called Northerly Island.

The Great Chicago Fire was in 1871, so ...

There is very little left from either fair. The Museum of Science and Industry building is basically a rebuilt (using stone this time) version of the Fine Arts building from the fair.

Ugh, just got back from NY and I really wanted to visit the Worlds Fair site. We didn't have enough time though, plus my family isn't into decay porn like I am...

Huge regret

Thanks for bumping this thread DCT61. I had forgotten all about it.

It's so great that you got to visit the fair. I wanted to go so bad. I had an ARCHIE comic book where Archie and the gang visited EXPO 70.
But I was 9 years old and thousands of miles away in central Illinois.

Thanks for that last photo..
I have one similar to it on a postcard.
As I recall, we entered the fairgrounds on the upper right hand side of the picture where the train tracks are (we came to the fair on the Bullet Train.) The first think you saw was THE TOWER OF SUN with the top poking out of the open frame roof structure. (The tower remains to this day, however the roof was removed) The white pointed structure (although I remember the building being red?) on the left, was the USSR PAVILION. The structure on the right with the white oval "quilted" roof was the UNITED STATES PAVILION. The yellow crescent shaped building to the left of the USA pavilion was the SUNTORY (whiskey) BUILDING. The pagoda-like structure in the center, was the BURMA pavilion. Its hard to believe all that is gone...and today is a park.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane, and the "heads up" on the ARCHIE comic. Im going to start looking for that.

I've been looking online for the Archie/EXPO 70 comic as well but I haven't found it.
(maybe because it wasn't the main story in the issue. If I remember correctly, only Veronica visited Osaka in 1970. Remember, she was from a rich family.

That said, I did find where Archie and the gang visit the 1964 world's Fair in NYC.
