The weird 80's pomo hotel at 1101 S Wabash is in site prep. They have begun demolishing the garage. Though this design is a dud, it will wipe out an equally heinous parking garage and provide a much needed boost to this parking laden section of the south loop.
The parking lot could have sat there for a little while longer waiting for a proper development. This dud will be with us for decades. Did they just dust off some old plans from the 70s?

Did I read correctly that this development will include 160,000 sq ft of retail?
Is this meant to host national chain stores?

This project is called "The Lincoln Common" according to Hines' website.

Crains just reported that the Children's Memorial development has landed an equity investment from the Middle East.

This goes to show you why the city needs to stand up to these Lincoln Park nimbys. There is so much potential money out there, and not just in the US, that is ready to invest in that area, plus boost the city's tax coffers.

Different sources say 160,000 vs 106,000.

But yes, the spot at the corner of Fullerton and Lincoln will be an enormous retail space big enough for several specialty chain retailers, a full size supermarket, or a compact discount store like Target (in fact, I'd bet Hines/McCaffery are giving the full court press to Target).

Other retail spaces are scattered around the development, many of them seem more tailored to restaurant/bar use. For the courtyard in the center, McCaffery probably wants apparel retailers like Roosevelt Collection or Market Common Clarendon. The high incomes in the neighborhood are surely attractive to national clothing chains, but apparel retailers haven't done well in Lincoln Park in the past few years; a lot of them around Halsted/Armitage closed up shop in favor of new/expanded locations downtown or at North/Clybourn, Damen, Southport. Admittedly this development is different with dedicated parking, so hopefully it succeeds.

There's supposed to be a 5 story gym associated with the development. Target is unlikely because there will be one at Clark & Drummond where Best Buy was

Thank you. The Hines site indicates 160.

Consider me something far less than enthused if this turns out to be an auto-centric, shopping development like Roosevelt Collection dumped into the middle of Lincoln Park. I had thought a goal for this site was to add residents that would in turn add vibrancy to Lincoln, Halsted and Clark streets and promote a walkable neighborhood, not to add a competing retail center.

^ Unlike RC it incorporates some existing historic buildings and is being built within the existing street system instead of building a giant, elevated new retail courtyard (that's how I like to describe RC). It will have a lot of garage parking, hence some auto-orientation. But I don't think it will be too bad.

Yeah a better comparison is Market Common Clarendon outside DC, if you've seen it. Same dream team of McCaffery and Antunovich. The courtyard/auto turnaround there is actually pretty pleasant and it has a good retail mix.

Again, though, I'm not sure how successful McCaffery will be at landing national chains when North/Clybourn is only 1 mile south and has pretty much every chain already. (IMO North/Clybourn actually needs to de-concentrate...)

^ Ugh, a couple of those in Chicago and the city will be absolutely so suburban and hopeless that I might start finding the suburbs cool again.

Please, no Pottery Barn, Cheesecake Factory, Crate & Barrel, and Container Store. For the love of God, chains are homogenizing America. And Antunovich is the absolutely shittiest developer of all time.
