Thanks, David. That is much better. I'll get used to your tricks and try Photoshop or GIMP myself next time. Also Bruce, I did notify LAPD but forgot to include the url in the message. Guess it would be more helpful to them if I do.
And now this brings me to the next point. They may well be parked outside the west side of City Hall facing north now, away from the Times building, BUT that is NOT City Hall in the photo on the right as I originally thought. After all, I was searching on the Keyword "City Hall" Due to its position, it has to be the old State Building on the west side of Spring Street. Hadn't seen that many pix of the outside of State Building so Found this at LAPL, looking North also, but taken from where the new PAB now is (police admin bldg).

You're absolutely correct Alan.

above: This building was a lot larger than I had remembered. Notice the people along the roof line.

below: The foundation is still visible.
If I remember correctly sopas_ej posted close-up photos of the foundation earlier in the thread.

Here's a photograph of the State Building that I haven't seen before. This view is from Main & 1st Street in 1937.
The building with the crenellated tower is the old Los Angeles Times building.

I also got a photo of the foundation from the top of City Hall on my April 9 excursion and photo shoot.

Looks like from this shot, the reason the foundation is still there is that they are still actively using the parking garage under it. Note the two cars going going down in curved driveway in this shot.

Nice shot Alan.
I didn't realize there was a parking garage beneath the State Building....but it certainly looks that way from your photograph.

I noticed just to the right of the old police station a sign that says 'White Log' something.

The only 'White Log' something I know of is the White Log Coffee Shop located at 1061 South Hill Street. This image is dated 1939.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/search...=1334721822148

Notice the font is the same in G_W's photo and the 1939 photo (small sign above Griddle Cakes), but the old police station was located quite some distance from the coffee shop on South Hill (and I believe the arrow in G_W's photo is pointing in the wrong direction).

My question is....was there more than one White Log Coffee Shop?

____

Happy side note.

Against all odds the little White Log cabin built in 1932 still stands at 1061 S. Hill Street and is doing business as El Comedor Mexican Grill.

Pretty amazing huh.

PAB south of City Hall

Bruce, I sure am getting the hang if it now. Thanks. Here is a view of the next shot in the sequence I took south of City Hall with the New Police Admin Bldg AND the newly replanted grass in the south lawn after the last lawn was destroyed by the Occupy LA (400+ tents) last October.

I cropped the White Log Coffee Shop photograph in my previous post. Here is the complete photo from 1939.

Photo dated 1981. I remember this incarnation. Or was it once called Dave's in the late '70s? I think I have an old
photo of it somewhere...will try to dig it out.

There were a number of White Log Taverns in L.A. in the '30s--not sure how long the chain lasted.

From the 1936 LACD under "WHITE":

1939:

I looked to see if perhaps any of the other locations might have somehow survived (I mean, if one is still downtown...), but didn't see any...

Interestingly, the White Log chain was statewide... a snippet from http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/:

"In 1930... Kenneth [Bemis] started a new restaurant chain in California called 'The White Log Taverns,' and just before opening his seventh restaurant in Berkeley, California.... As the chain developed to seventy-two units, within the next seven years, from the West Coast to Washington, D.C.,...."

And then there's this in Gebhard & Winter:

Google Books

and these color shots:

From the George Mann Archives: Cruising the Coast Highway

Just posted on the On Bunker Hill time travel blog, the first in a series of circa 1954 vintage L.A. restaurant photos from the archives of 3-D photographer George Mann. This time, it's a virtual trip out to Malibu to view the famous seal-themed neon at Las Flores Cafe and some lost taverns, then back home via the Googie Penguin coffee shop as you've never seen it before. Plus some of the wild, hand-drawn signs which sat above the 3-D viewing machines in local restaurant lobbies. Hope you'll swing by and have a look.

The Ems is not new to us here, of course.... while I can't find the post (the "search" feature here objects to too-short words), it seems to me we were once speculating as to the origins of the name "Ems," ruling out "Emergency Medical Services." Anyway, as I am rereading my favorite book on Paris--Seven Ages of Paris, for me, the definitive book on that city in the way that Reyner Banham's Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies is for L.A.--something caught my eye. During a chapter discussing the buildup of Franco-Prussian tensions ca. 1870, the name of the German spa town Bad Ems is mentioned... hmmm. Could this be the origin of the name of Bunker Hill's Ems?

found on ebay
What I believe you are looking at is the SE corner of 1st Street and Hill. Under his butt is the intersection. This lot is currently empty and is waiting for the next Federal Courts building. The building (looks like a set of 3) just to the right of the end of the flag pole is where I am typing this from. The actor is hanging from whatever building used to be where the Stanley Mosk Courthouse currently stands.

Here is my post from way back in 2009 that mentions The Ems.

I'm not sure of the street address for this one. Notice the archaic telephone booth.

Also why are there windows in what looks like a retaining wall?
They're to the right of The Vendome in the photo.

Hmmm...intriguing...why The EMS and not.....say.... The ELMS?
Anyone know what EMS stand for?

G_W, your German spa town Bad Ems is a good idea. Do we know who the architect was...perhaps he was German?

Is the middle shot of the MulHolland Dam? Is the last photo of the Lookout Mountain area?

Well, I don't know why we've never run across this before, but forget "Bad Ems" (although I suppose the owner's origins could have been in that German town). I just found this:

It's a caption from Arcadia Publishing's Historic Hotels Of Los Angeles and Hollywood, in its Images of America series....

I have some requests concerning a few buildings.

This building is on San Vicente and 26th Street, on the boarder Santa Monica and Brentwood.

This building is on Montana and 26th Street on the Boarder of Santa Monica and Brentwood.

I was wondering if anyone could get historic photos of these two buildings. I live in this area, and have always wondered about the history behind these two buildings. Also, if anyone could get pictures of 24th Street between San Vicente and Montana, I would be very appreciative. I live in that area of that street, and have always wondered what it looked like so long ago. Thanks!
