Yeah totally!!! I wish I would have had some more time really do the city justice... areas like Harbortown, and the Med Center are really great. I just didn't have time for them because I was only there for a few hours. Plus it was a H-O-T day... I was sweating bullets just walking downtown.

Very cool. Nashville, which i visit every Christmas because my family lives there, seems so intent on progressing and getting bigger and more sophisticated. Memphis just seems happy to kick back and enjoy life. It's very "real."
What a great thread! One of my best friends who lives in Knoxville is moving to Austin, TX and I'm flying out this weekend to help her. I said the only we had to do was stop in Memphis on the way. Now I really can't wait. What a nice looking city. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, it's not every day we see Memphis on this forum! The city has still some 50s atmosphere, which is nice.
Yeah, that's really important to me. I hate that there's so many vacancies in downtown Memphis, but thankfully it's a city that's not to quick to tear down old buildings.
Economically, Memphis seems to have all the right ingredients for a great decade... steady stream of new energy, great creative class, growing medical industry. The only thing missing now is putting more investment into downtown. I hope the people of Memphis will see how amazing their historic city is and start putting more investment into it.

I know - both of my (maternal) grandparents were born/raised in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward. But even still, as somebody who's accustomed to the demographics of LA - and in general, West Coast cities - Southern demographics still have a certain shock value to them. Anyways, didn't mean to dwell too far off-topic

LOL-- I'm from Little Rock so I'm well familiar with Memphis BBQ. LOVE IT!!
Yes, like what was said, most cities in the South have a significant AA population... especially those on the Mississippi river. But I was reminded on my trip that (unlike urban Texas or California) there are still places in the South that DON'T have a significant Hispanic population. That's what was weird to me.
