AW Leil has one of their large crawlers at Halterm, it looks like it will begin dismantling some of the old ship to shore gantry cranes that haven't been used lately.

AW Leil looks to be setting up another crawler crane, now at Fairview Cove, likely to remove the two aging cranes at the eastern berth.

Nope Confirmed - they are coming down. ( Up-Update - The liebherr is staying. its newer. The old one is original to the terminal opening, and its mate was scrapped a few years ago as it was always broken.)

there is some oversize cargo on the pier that has been using multiple cranes to load onto trucks. might be related to that. I havent heard those cranes were being removed - they still get some use (Unlike the 3 going at halterm, which apparently needed 3 days of de-contamination from all the bird crap in them)

Thanks for the update. AllNS seems to regularly report all the smaller cranes at both ports are "junk cranes". I felt as though Fairview Cove's were still commonly used.

The 2nd last crane headed towards Dartmouth is coming down, the first section was lowered as I drove by today. Apparently it is the same company that is removing 3 Halterm cranes.

The furthest crane out will remain.

An interesting article about the new crane at Grandhaven Estates:

Out with the old: Halifax developer chooses new tower crane for long haul

Also sheds some light on future plans.

Anyone know the crane count in Halifax currently?

If I had to guess I'd say in the 20-30 range.

Spotted several pieces of a grey construction crane heading southbound on Robie Street today below North Street. Only site I can think of is The Berkeley on Pepperell (Ben's Bakery).

Also has anyone else seen the monster rescue crane on South Park Street? That thing is massive!

The Berkeley has a smaller yellow crane on site, however, that company has a history of starting a foundation with one crane and then swapping out when their larger one becomes available.

If it was dark grey pieces you saw, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was lattice jib extensions for the large mobile crane R&D has down on South Park. That Red crawler is a 440 ton capacity crane, it last set the steel beams on the 103/102 interchange work and was used to load bridge deck sections on barges during the big lift from the facility in Woodside.

R&D Crane has been a major player in the local scene for a few years now with mobile and crawler cranes. They are owned by the Cherubini Group and appeared spun off as their own company starting with cranes Cherubini was using for their metal fabrication installs, and have since expanded with more equipment.

Their rise locally seemed to time with All Cranes closing their local office. R&D is based out of the large new Burnside Cherubini facility. They have a strong hold on local tower crane activity, and their yard appears to be used as a temporary storage facility for cranes between jobs. Diving by yesterday, I spotted what looks like a new to Halifax crane I assume we will see up in the coming weeks. It appears to be direct from the manufacturer.

^Seven sounds right. From left to right;

MR Apartments
Richmond Yards (X3)
The Elevation on Robie
The Ventura on Young
The Stackhouse

There is also Trinity Site but it is blocked by Purdy's Wharf in that angle.

Halifax construction boom lifted by 'unprecedented' number of tower cranes

The number of cranes fluctuates as projects begin and end, but between 25 and 37 cranes operate in the region, according to the Halifax Regional Municipality.

It is hard to square the large number of construction projects with the low housing start figures. Not sure what is happening there. Projects are disproportionately in core areas so they're more noticeable? They take a long time so even though there are a lot, not many start in a given year? There are a lot in progress that will be completed, but they are missed due to having begun during different periods? Errors or differences in the data between cities? Somebody posted April housing start data and I think Halifax was one of the lowest cities on there.

I think the multi-unit does have a big impact on housing start numbers since so many projects are multi year.

Impressive! I was reading an article today stating that the average number of cranes in Boston has dropped from 12 a few years ago to 9 in the first quarter of ‘22. Punching above our weight class in this respect.
