For those who don't live in Québec, basically, people who live on the North Shore pretty much never venture on the South Shore, and vice versa.
Okay, I didn't know about that, but given how hopelessly congested A15 is, it's hardly surprising.

Yeah it's nice if your only goal is to carry people from point A to point B, but we are seeing a serious short-circuiting of public transportation planning in Greater Montreal and a semi-privatization of the whole thing.

The REM is a nice project but politicians are adding extra spurs everywhere and giving studies for entire corridors to CDPQ Infra (such as the Taschereau corridor in Longueuil more recently, where a tram would be ideal). There is a serious lack of long-term vision from the people who have the final word, not unsimilar to what's going on in Ontario with Ford.

Some short-sighted people believe this is fine because at the end of the day, we get more public transit, but we don't get it where it's more needed or in the form it's needed. Montreal's transit future shouldn't just be elevated metro lines cutting through entire neighborhoods. Unfortunately with this government, this is where we're going.

I think we should wait a couple years to see if the WFH economy is permanent. The drop in ridership could hinder the expansion of the public transit network. The transit system in Montréal is based on bringing people downtown, but downtown office jobs are nowhere to be found at the moment. less than 10% occupancy

The transit expansion is probably still worthwhile if people end up adopting the pattern of working in the office Monday, Wednesday & Friday in one week then Tuesday & Thursday the next week.

Even if people are permanently WFH (which I don't think is guaranteed), people will still go places for other things, and Montreal will still have 4 million such people, and we will need solutions for that which don't involve cars. Also, downtown will still be a major leisure destination even if Place Ville-Marie is empty (which I think is doubtful).

Réseau express métropolitain, Montréal's new transit system, with spokesperson Jean-Vincent Lacroix

The currently under construction Réseau express métropolitain, will be Montreal's newest transit system. Featuring 26 stations and a length of 67 kilometres, and stretching from the south shore to Deux-Montagnes in the north and Anse-à-l'Orme in the west, it is poised to transform rapid-transit in the Greater Montreal Region in the coming years.

Featuring exciting new underground stations in downtown Montreal, and passing underneath the imposing Mount Royal, it is sure an exciting time for the city.

In this video discussion with Jean-Vincent Lacroix, spokesperson for the REM, we discuss the system currently being built, the next steps and the organization behind this massive infrastructure project (CPDQ Infra).

Snapshot of the REM's Des Sources to Anse-à-l'Orme Stations - November 24, 2021

A view of REM construction progress as seen from A40 West. The video starts just before Des Sources Station and finishes just past the western terminus at Anse-à-l’Orme Station. Lots of fantastic progress to be seen, on the elevated guideway that traces its way alongside the A40 highway in Montreal.

Guided Visit of Édouard-Montpetit Station on Montreal's Réseau Express Métropolitain - November 2021

Located in the heart of Mont-Royal, the REM’s Édouard-Montpetit station is connected to the blue metro line and serves the Université de Montréal campus. It will be the deepest subway station in Canada and one of the deepest in the world (72 metres).

In this video, we take you through a guided tour offered to the media in November 2021 of the station under construction. Journey deep underground, down to the Mont-Royal rail tunnel, now more than 100 years old, and the future route of the REM.

The latest on the timeline from the REM developer: Brossard-Central Station antenna opening late 2022. The rest opening late 2024 with a question mark for the airport antenna. Still struggling with the Mont-Royal tunnel portion and McGill station.
