Penguins Arena Steel To Go Up Next Week
PITTSBURGH (AP) ― A new $321 million arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins is close to meeting goals for minority and female set-asides, and the structural steel should begin going up soon.

Those are the highlights of an update on the building's progress by the arena's general contractor, P.J. Dick-Hunt.

A 200-foot construction crane will put the first steel beams in place next week.

The city-county Sports and Exhibition Authority wants 25 percent of the construction work done by minority-owned firms and 10 percent by female-owned firms.

So far, 24 percent of the work is being done by minority firms and 6 percent by female-owned companies.

The arena is set to open by the 2010-11 season.

Not too much has changed to the eye of the casual observer since my last pics. However, the next pics
should be a lot more interesting as the steel structure starts going up next week.

The same as last time: basically same shot, different zoom.

I haven't been to this site to grab a glance at the work despite being around it virtually every day. Progress is good, hopefully no further delays will plague the project.

I don't think there have been any delays during construction. Perhaps Brandon was referring to the delay in actually getting the funding in place for the new arena or the resistance that the old Central Medical/St. Francis hospital put up during the first attempted demolition. However, as for the site prep and construction progress itself, if there have been any delays, they have been kept very quiet.

I should have said delays in general, because there aren't any delays really. Other than the whole village they were creating is gone. Wasn't there some scheme back in the day to create an entire community with condos and stuff with this project? Like a whole neighborhood redevelopment?

Brandon, I believe that you are thinking about Riverparc. That was an ambitious mixed use project to be developed in and around the cultural district. This site will have the arena, a parking garage, and the recently announced hotel plans.

^No i don't think he was talking about riverparc; I think he's talking about the isle of capri proposal for the mellon arena site. But they didn't win the casino, so this is a different plan.

Consol buys naming rights to new hockey arena

The Penguins today announced that Consol Energy has signed a 21-year deal for naming rights to the team's new arena, scheduled to open in 2010. The team did not announce the price.

The building will be known as the Consol Energy Center.

Now they can start slinging around steel. I'm not sure how much work is going to get done in the next 2 weeks but starting early Jan, expect to see the steel superstructure rise quickly. I remember reading somewhere that they should be working on the upper deck frame by this April.

The law firm of Goldberg, Persky, and White has it's headquarters on fifth Ave. They have put together a website with a web cam of the arena, a link to a you tube time lapse construction video, and some other information on the new arena. A very smart marketing move by them.......

I always thought arenas of this type were built with rebar and concrete.. Is the steal structure just for the 5th-ave side shops and office space, or is it going to wrap the whole way around eventually?
