Great Beijing photos! Beijing is a must visit some day, the city seem to have so much culture as well as exciting modern architecture.

Yes, Beijing is the mix of Oriental cultural tradition and very modern skyscrapers. I was there in 2001 and I got really impressed. It´s a really must visit city.

Were many of the hutongs still intact? I havent been there since 2007.

Only a couple pockets these days. These hutongs are not exactly pristine homes to begin with. Many have been subdivided over the years and plumbing is sporadic. Residents need to use local communal bathrooms. Some have been revitalized and turned into commercial use, but far more have turned to slums and have been razed and redeveloped.

Visit Prince Kung's Mansion early in the morning to avoid the crazy crowds! It took a lot of waiting and maneuveuring to capture some of these without the odd groups of heads popping in.
