Ok, I've neglected this thread, but there really hasn't been much news to report. Now it appears Salt Lake is about to see some exciting growth downtown, so I thought I'd retool this thread.

What a old thread. Salt Lake has a lot more going for it now. This needs to be updated.
I will have to get to work on this and update it.

The City Creek Center project in downtown salt lake city is underway. The Mall is coming down to make way for highrise Condo Towers, Outdoor retails and office space.

Thumbs up You know your Sh**

You've got everything nice and concice, but it will take until 2015 to complete this. The 30-story Cowboy Partners Bldg is a "maybe," the "Utah World Trade Center" is a "lets talk this thing up..." Let's hope Salt Lake gets everything that's being talked about.

It sucks about the 600-foot building, the Zion Social Hall(http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=...akecity-ut-usa), The Eagle Gate Plaza (original plans were 39 stories), The Twin 40-Story Towers (to be built by Kashogi), The American Towers (why didn't they just build ONE BIG 52-story Bldg?). And so on and so forth.

I do love SLC, I just liken it to the Rodney Dangerfield of cities - No Respect!

Somethin goin on

It's good to see that there's stuff going on in Salt Lake, as far as the skyline growth goes. But I think that much taller buildings need to be built. Buildings taller than 450 ft. Salt Lake isn't all that impressive compared to a lot of well-known cities in the country. And I think that if Salt Lake wants to become the "heart of the Intermountain Empire," we'll need to start impressing people.

We need a mix of quality AND quantity.

...The 0.35-acre site is zoned Downtown Support District, which seeks to promote “an area that fosters the development of a sustainable urban neighborhood that accommodates commercial, office, residential and other uses.”

The uniquely designed building would rely on balconies to supplement the small units within it. Housing ranges from 346 square feet to 468 square feet. Ninety-seven of the units would include balconies, which add up to 90 square feet of living space. Eighteen wouldn’t.

Renderings show balconies facing 200 West, as well as internal balconies overlooking a courtyard area within the building...

...The project, which is in for design review, was the second mid-rise infill project submitted this week. Real estate experts consider Salt Lake City one of the top places to invest in housing in the country, and the construction boom continues.

A very unique parcel in an area dominated by light industrial and big-box commercial but lately giving way to a flurry of new mult-use residential will soon be home to a large, missing middle residential project. The Salt Lake City Planning Commission approved with conditions a, 'Method Studio designed', Planned Development request by developers, dbURBAN Communities, to build 64 townhomes near the intersection of 400 West and Aspen Avenue.

The project, referred to as The Marq will include 16 residential buildings and a clubhouse that will occupy the space directly north of the Salt Lake City Target Store. The units will be rentals with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and will be walking distance to two of the city’s fastest-growing neighborhoods, Central Ninth and the Granary District.

The bulk of the units will be one-bedroom apartments with 32 one bedroom units planned, 22 two-bedroom units and 10 three-bedroom units. The units will be three-stories with a car garage on the ground floor, living space on the second and bedrooms on the third floor. Many units will also include roof decks.

According to planning documents, because of the adjacent industrial buildings and big box stores, the project’s architects have made human-scale design a priority for each building. The developers will use exterior materials to have the buildings reflect the industrial history of the Granary District. Building materials will be a mix of concrete, brick, metal, wood and glass.

- Revitalizing an abandoned parcel on the edge of Granary District in Salt Lake City, The Marq was designed to attract individuals seeking beauty in the sublime in a revitalized, industrial community. The townhome project consists of 64, 1-3 bed townhomes, designed into 14 distinct buildings with a landmark clubhouse built from reclaimed shipping containers.

With a nod to the neighborhood’s industrial charm, the community clubhouse was constructed from creatively stacked shipping containers to establish both indoor and outdoor gathering areas. The resort-style amenity boasts a uniquely designed, year-round lounge pool, modern metal fire pit, hammock chairs, and an indoor bar/lounge area for residents to enjoy.

To reinforce the industrial-modern theme, 5-foot tall metal building numbers wrap the corners of each building. Additionally, the community logo was cut into custom, metal panels and installed as an overhead shade structure in the outdoor seating area. In the interior common areas, tables and shelving were custom built with walnut wood inlays.

The project is targeting the unique “makers” and “creators” in the Salt Lake area. The interiors of each unit were designed to be almost exclusively white, in order to create a blank, white canvas for these individuals to individualize their home with their own furnishings, art, and accessories.

Updates East Bench - Misc. - University of Utah


Health Sciences garage, roadway and connector



Construction of a new 1,400-car parking garage and the road realignment on North Medical Drive is underway. The garage, located between the IJ & Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center and the Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers, will feature a lowered roadway entrance and a pedestrian connector to University Hospital so people on foot can avoid the traffic on North Medical Drive. The road realignment will raise North Medical Drive, allowing for better access into the North Medical Garage and the new parking garage. Additionally, two new roundabouts will be added at the entrance to University Hospital and the entrance to the new parking garage to improve traffic flow.
