The poster for Glasser Bros. Bail Bonds shows they were down the street. They are still in business to this day by the way. They were a very early bonding company and catered to the Mickey Cohen mob and other well to do clients in need of bail.

So since there's been some talk recently about the Main St Gym at the Turner Halle, thought I'd mention it was by Capitain & Krempel. I took a screen grab of when I'd included it in a Powerpoint about LA's Romanesque past and then screenshot those other instances of Capitain/Krempel's inclusions therein just for fun, because that's literally my idea of fun. Threw it all on the desktop and it came out like so:

I will take a shot at the mystery object. TVG was a hall. Probably more of an auditorium than a full blown theater. I'd guess the archway with the bail bondsmen ad was the stage. The object near the ceiling was either a hoist for raising or lowering lights, sets, or such or a counterweight. If you magnify the object, it looks like there is a beam above 2 doors. That's my guess and I'm not totally satisfied with it.

The ceiling light situation.

What caught my eye was the chain leading from the globe fixture to an outlet(?) in the ceiling.

Then I noticed a barely visible string going over to the light on the left. Hanging in the center of all this is a large clear lightbulb.



What's going on here Was Rube Goldberg the electrician?

The line between the school house light and the drop cord may be a pull chain for the school house light canopy switch. It was common to have pull chain switches on ceiling lights in the day. The string may be to operate the switch or most likely a way to hang a light weight sign for customers to read. The chain looks like it's attached to the plate holding the drop cord. The plate for the drop cord may be a device for attaching drop cords to knob and tube wiring or a duplex outlet. My guess is the drop cord light was a non elegant way to get more light at the counter rather than a replacement for the school house light. The bulb must have glared like crazy.
