In my experience NJ transit riders are far more civilized and polite than MTA riders..must be the crowding.

I'm a daily MNRR rider and rarely a week goes by when I don't observe some form of an altercation - whether it be over seat blocking, loud headphones, etc. The crowdedness of the rush hour trains really brings out the best in people.

Admittedly, I'm an offender when it comes to leaving a coffee cup on the floor near my seat, though lately I've been trying to be not as forgetful and bring it off w/ me to throw out.

NJ Transit turns to Canada for a loan

By Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
on April 24, 2015 at 4:35 PM, updated April 24, 2015 at 4:37 PM

NJ Transit is turning to Canada instead of the ailing state Transportation Trust Fund, for a $300 million loan to bridge the gap between paying for work covered by a federal grant and actually receiving the money.

"This would authorize NJ Transit to obtain a line of credit," said Kathleen Sharman NJ Transit Chief Financial Officer. "It would be used to pay for preventative maintenance expenses eligible to be reimbursed by federal funds."

NJ Transit installing cameras on all light rail trains in response to spate of robberies

By Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
on April 24, 2015 at 1:05 PM, updated April 24, 2015 at 5:45 PM

Cameras are coming to NJ Transit's light rail trains in a response to riders' concerns about security and a spate of cellphone robberies on the Newark city subway.

"The River Line has implemented on-board cameras, which NJ Transit police can use to monitor activity on the (light rail) vehicle. Cameras will be rolled out in June on Hudson-Bergen and Newark Light Rail lines," said Janice Pepper, NJ Transit director of research.

Metro-North opening temporary rail station in Milford
Frank Juliano
Updated 5:34 pm, Saturday, April 25, 2015

In preparation for work to begin on the Devon Bridge, Metro North workers construct a temporary train platform for passenger transfers between the Waterbury and New Haven lines in the Devon section of Milford, Conn. on Thursday, April 23, 2015. Photo: Brian A. Pounds

MILFORD -- Metro-North Railroad's temporary Devon station, which will be in use from May 4 into early October, is exactly that: temporary.

The open-air platform sits at the Y-shaped junction of tracks where the Waterbury Branch meets the main New Haven Line. There's no canopy, no restrooms, no ticket machines and no parking.

The state's Rail Transportation Plan, covering 2012-16, mentions a permanent Metro-North station in Devon, but this is not it.

But the two, four-car-length platforms -- one on the branch and one on Track 3 with a walkway connecting them -- are a key piece of a major upgrade to the Waterbury Branch.

http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/W...#photo-7867657
------------

Ironically, even though it's extremely barebones, literally just a platform, the new station is still better than all the other Waterbury branch stations.

I was expecting much , its nice for a Temporary Station. The Proposed permanent Station isn't on the Wye section but a few hundred feet east of it.

Metro-North ridership reaches record 85M

Hoa Nguyen, htnguyen@lohud.com 7:17 p.m. EDT April 27, 2015

Increasing numbers of Westchester County residents commuting to Connecticut and Bronx residents traveling to Westchester helped propel Metro-North Railroad’s ridership to record levels last year, officials said.

About 84.7 million passengers rode Metro-North in 2014, solidifying its position as the country’s second busiest passenger rail carrier in the country, second only to Long Island Rail Road, which had about 86 million riders, the MTA reported. Metro-North’s last record was in 2008 when ridership reached 83.6 million.

Family of Ellen Brody, driver in Metro-North crash, to sue

Khurram Saeed and Hoa Nguyen 7:59 a.m. EDT May 5, 2015

The family of Ellen Brody, the driver at the center of the deadliest crash in Metro-North history, plans to sue the railroad and others for her death, saying a badly-designed grade crossing that should have been closed years ago is to blame and not the mother of three.

Her family has filed a notice of claim, the first step before a lawsuit can be pursued. It does not say how much they are seeking in damages.

Brody, 49, of Edgemont, and five train passengers died in the crash.

Direct rush hour train service to the Jersey Shore starts mid-May, NJ Transit says

NJ Transit will offer six rush hour commuter trains which eliminate a transfer in Long Branch, using a dual mode locomotive, similar to this one seen at Newark Penn Station. ((Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com))

NJ Transit officials were successful in getting federal funds to give commuters six one-seat rush hour trains between New York and Bay Head starting later this month.

The new service is a prelude to NJ Transit officials seeking funds to extend summer express service on the North Jersey Coast Line this year, said Nancy Snyder, an NJ Transit spokeswoman.

The six-new-rush-hour trains, announced Monday, lets passengers skip having to change trains in Long Branch to reach shore towns points in Southern Monmouth and Ocean counties. They also would offer tourists more options for additional direct rides to the shore.
