It's insane how good Tampa Bay is doing this year. I hope they hit a wall in February.

They got spanked by Pittsburgh last night.

Wrong thread.

Chichi wasn't bad overall for draft picks. I think four contracts were suspect. Lucic, the bigest failure. Puljujärvi which was weird to give 10+ million over 3 years for someone with 30 career NHL points. That one is just terrible. Dras was overpaid, but what are you going to do with the only other player that seems to put up points and from a standpoint of where you are, but it certainly doesn't make other options very easy.

Losing 2-4 is a spanking?

Pittsburgh scored 3 goals on 5 shots in the first. It was 4-0 at one point, Murray whiffed on JT Miller goal late in the third and I think Stamkos scored one after that.

If you watched the game it was a total spanking. The score isn't reflective of how badly they got dominated.

I guess your definition of spanking is different from mine.

I did, actually, but since you want to continue making a point, i'll continue making my point.

You know why Pittsburgh won last night? And why they were up 4-0? Because Vasilevskiy wasn't making saves and Murray was. Pretty simple. This wasn't an issue of Pittsburgh spanking Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay beat Pittsburgh last night in the following categories:
  • Shots
  • Faceoffs
  • All Situations Corsi
  • All Situations Fenwick
  • All Situations Goals Expected
  • 5v5 Corsi
  • 5v5 Fenwick
  • 5v5 shots
  • 5v5 Goals Expected

Sourcing: http://corsica.hockey/games/?id=2018020776

Which essentially means that if you played the same game over 100 times Tampa would win 65% of the time.

Basically, Vasilevskiy's GSAA (goals saved against average) was -2, meaning that he allowed two more goals than he otherwise was expected to this game. His dSv% was also -10% under his expected save percentage. So, Tampa only lost because Vasilevskiy was a sieve for the first period. That's basically it. Oh, and Murray exceeded expectations.

But maybe you're right and Pittsburgh absolutely, totally, without question dominated Tampa Bay last night. Or...they didn't. We'll never be certain.

tl;dr Pittsburgh didn't spank Tampa - Vasilevskiy played poorly.

You can trot out your fancy stats all you want. Every time Tampa had a chance in the 1st, Pittsburgh went down and scored.

It is an irrefutable fact the score was 4-0 until 5 mins left in the 3rd period.

The result was never in question.

Looking forward to the trade deadline here, looks like it could be quite active this year. I wonder if Ottawa will move Duchene and Stone now. I wonder if the Flames will make a play for Ferland and I could see us moving Neal as he has done exactly jack shit this year...

I'm sure we could trade Neal for Lucic (yes the deal would be one for one), other than that he's untradable with his new contract or without the Flames eating a bunch of it, so no point to it, besides it would make our GM look stupid after giving him that huge contract so he's not going to move him.

There's no way in hell I want Lucic on the Flames, he's completely useless.

I hope they stay quiet at the deadline, unless Columbus goes crazy and gives up Bob and Panarin for Neal and Smith.

They don't really need much and don't have many assets they'd want to part with.

The Flames don't have their second, fourth or sixth or seventh round picks, they do have NYI 4th and CAR 7th from other trades.

Did someone throw a brick at your head? Why would we ever want that overpriced slug? Hell no!

Apparently I need to use smaller words and bigger print to make my point? NEAL IS UNTRADABLE! He is in the same category as Lucic. Ironically they both have 5G, 7A so far this year.

I really hope Neal gets going post All Star break.

If he can manage to score every other game down the stretch, that makes the contract a bit less awful.

Not sure I would say Neal is untradable, he's not living up to expectations this year, but is a proven player who is quite reliable. The problem this year is where he is playing and who he is playing with. Moving him would be quite tough though...

Jets are slowly gaining ground on the Flames.

I hope this trend continues.

The Jets are gaining ground quickly. That's a first period I take it.
