I lost track of this thread. Can someone please explain, link to 1) what the final approved plans are for this; and 2) what’s being done in “phase 1” (or are they going ahead with the whole project at once)?

Phase one is completed and opened already.. Penn Station west end concourse is now connected to the Farley Building.

Phase two has started and is in progress.. to be completed by 2020.. here's a link from Curbed NY with the details and some photos.

Vornado, Related target life-sciences tenants for Farley Post Office redevelopment
Joint venture is looking to tap into high-growth sector

April 02, 2018

Quote:
Vornado Realty Trust and the Related Companies are targeting biotechnology and pharmaceutical tenants for their redevelopment of the Farley Post Office Building.

The joint venture hired a broker from Boston, which has a more mature life-sciences industry, to develop a marketing strategy to attract such tenants to the 900,000-square-foot office-and-retail project, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Quote:
...while New York has long had first-rate medical and research institutions, limited lab space has made it difficult to retain life-science startups.

The high cost of building upgrades and zoning requirements have left the city with just 2.8 million square feet of rentable lab space, compared to 16.2 million square feet in New Jersey and 26.8 million square feet in the greater Boston area, according to JLL.

More on the city's efforts in regards to that...

This may possibly be the greatest single improvement in New York City's history... the crappy current Penn Station turning into a modern take of a classic train station.

Great update by baronson on YIMBY + credit to c.lilianmarlen 1 on Instagram. I know this does nothing to solve Penn's actual track capacity issues, but I still can't believe this project is actually happening :

One thing at a time. This will GREATLY enhance the circulation, flow, and feel of Penn Staion - taking it from the current dump to something the City and passengers can be prouder of. Getting that rail tunnel built is a must, and will enhance the capacity issues. Both have to be done, but better capacity aside, visibility and access goes a long way.

^ The bus station itself would need to be as large as Penn Station. There are current issues with trying to expand the Port Authority bus terminal alone. Not to mention you don't need more buses crowding the streets around Penn Station.

MTA, Amtrak at Odds Over Penn Station Reno

May 31, 2018

Quote:
Both New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and state officials recently accused Amtrak of planning to redevelop sections of Penn Station without input from other parties. A spokesperson for Amtrak expressed confusion over the accusation, as discussions over Penn Station’s future had recently taken place.

MTA President Patrick Foye and Empire State Development Corporation president Howard Zemsky said in a joint statement that they had learned of Amtrak’s plan to entrust a private party with the development of the station.

Quote:
That, they said, would go against plans to transform Penn Station.

“Despite New York State’s mobilization toward this goal, and its leadership in delivering a new home for Amtrak in Moynihan Station, Amtrak has conveyed its intent to unilaterally entrust the future of Penn Station to a private developer rather than engage in a thoughtful, collaborative planning process," the joint statement continued.

Amtrak spokesperson Christina Leeds expressed Amtrak’s confusion regarding the matter, citing that the company had recently met with ESD, Long Island Rail Road and MTA staff to collaborate on ways to improve the station, which includes “seeking a world-class facilities operator for our concourse."

At the end of 2020, after Amtrak moves to Moynihan Station, the company will leave 50,000 square feet of its 260,000 square feet of space at Penn Station, which will open Penn for redevelopment. Amtrak still owns the station, but leases sections to LIRR and NJ Transit.

As part of a move to increase station cleanliness and efficiency, Amtrak plans to hire a private property manager to operate the company’s concourse in Penn. It is not yet clear if the manager will oversee the other company spaces.

“First and foremost, we want to make the station focused on travelers still,” said Amtrak official Janet Campbell-Lorenc, who is also managing the station overhaul. "It’s still about rail travel and helping customers through the building. But we also want to generate revenue.”

New York state is working on its own planning process, however—MTA and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo have expressed interest in using the free room to spread out customers from LIRR’s cramped space.

Directly to the right of me taking this photo was a bum taking a dump on the sidewalk, so not everything is new!

Agree. Tell this Londoner to stop trolling the threads of the World's Capital. London-centric nonsense. A Victorian station in 2018. Don't make me laugh mate.

Yeah, 10021 is easily the worst poster on SSP. His nonstop boner for all things London has all but ruined several threads for Chicagoans as well. He's so obnoxious and snobby. I'm happy he left our country
