You might not have, but there are many contexts in which “North America” is used to refer to the United States and Canada.

I don't know about other Americans, but very early on in elementary school, I was always taught that the southernmost North American country is Panama. Central America is not a continent, it's just the southern portion of North America. The Caribbean nations are also part of North America.

So, if some people refer to North America being only the US and Canada, the only context I can think of for that reference is when referring to so-called "developed" nations.

I will repeat no one considers North America just Canada and the U.S.
I think it's ludicrous that you insist that a large group of people think that

I have also heard this occasionally and increasingly as a contrast to "Latin America" but still far more often than not, it is used to describe the actual landmass and its associated countries and territories; Panama up to Greenland as well as the Caribbean.

People in Spanish speaking countries (Brazil too I think) are taught that North and South America are a singular continent rather than two separate continents.

If describing geological forms and geographic landmasses, then Mexico and Central America are part of North America. And as you say for some parts of the world it’s simply “the Americas”.

If one is talking about cultural regions or in economic terms, then the US and Canada are in one grouping and Latin America is the other. Big companies, for instance, that run their business along some geographical split will have a “North American” division in the US and Canada and manage Latin America, including Mexico, separately.

I think you are ignorant.
Show me some literature where Mexico is not considered a North American country then

If I was to follow your example if a company has a European office in London, and an Eastern European office in Poland, then Poland is not considered a part of Europe proper, only a part of Eastern Europe.

When Texas and California were part of Mexico, were they no longer in North America because most of the populous spoke Spanish?

let's be real here...it's technically both but global corporations of which apparently some of us have worked and some have not, and actual cultural, language, and economic spheres (although less this), mexico is often seperated from north america into latin america.

Ok, so does that mean Mexico is not part of North America?

i'm just tellin' ya how the term is often - right or wrong - actually thought of and used. like how "america" actually often refers to the united states and not the entire new world.

Montreal has had a strong mural scene since 1972, from what I've heard, Philly started in the early 1980's. When it comes to graffiti, MTL, NYC and Philly are basically the leaders, noone copied anyone.

Here's a link to some of Montreal's murals from 1975.

Everyone knows Cornbread (of Philly) started the modern graffiti movement. The Philly Mural Arts Program is the largest public art program in the US.

How many gold/platinum records did Montreal produce in the 1960s/1970s ... Philadelphia International records produced some 170 gold/platinum records. Philly Soul (The Sound of Philadelphia). Montreal doesn't have Philly diversity, not even close.

Congratulations. Philadelphia is the most unique city in North America - dare I say the World!

OP, please change the thread title to reflect this reality.

I think he means Philadelphia is more diverse in some ethnic way, although anthropologists had to explain what it actually means to me, cause I grew up and always lived in the Paris region, and so-called ethnic diversity is sort of random to my generation and more an more natural over here.
But these guys are just American; they've always been careful about ethnicity, right? Lol, so they still make note of it. I'm quite amused when they say - uh? It doesn't really look European - when they have to face us Parisian savages.

Anyway, I've once been to Philadelphia, while I never have to Montreal yet, and it's true that they still seem more ethnically diverse than you guys up north. They've had lots of everything for long over there, just as we've had here since WW2.
I saw you guys had some Asians and more and more immigrants from Fr-speaking Africa, but you're not just quite there yet. I mean, for instance, I have at least 3 Indian retailers/restaurants in a 300m radius from my home (while I only live some inner suburb, namely Maisons-Alfort), and yet the Indians are not really supposed to be used to our country. Then I'm like - wow, we even have more and more Indians here now. We really have every damn thing.

But it's ok. You don't have to blame on yourselves for that, cause your weather appears somewhat harsh in the winter.

I was talking about race, Philly is a minority-majority city. But actually, I was largely mocking the premise of this thread entirely, hence my mention to the 1985 MOVE bombing by PPD in West Philadelphia.

This thread should be closed down.
