Wow nice! That is the best shot of the uniqueness of the SF tower's facade I have seen yet, it really glorifies the tower and not the skyline. They just have to clean the windows still... they are pretty dirty. A photographer should take a 5 minute time lapse shot during the golden hour and capture that sweet light shift from this angle.

Yes but this is why I said way back that I find the assumption of maintenance/security responsibilities by Salesforce to be reassuring (and am willing to tolerate their slapping their name on everything if that's what it takes). As with Yerba Buena Park, which could have also become a homeless hangout, hopefully private security will be able to do what the city and the SFPD would never do: Keep the place cleaned up and free of "hangers out" taking it over. Legally I doubt you can entirely prevent their use, but you can restrict it enough to perhaps make the place unattractive to them. Anyway, Yerba Buena seems to succeed somehow.

Agreed.

I live back in L.A. now but lived in and love SF. Sibling rivalry aside, I am very disappointed in the lobby and plaza of the 'Transbay Tower'. While the tower groundbreaking and truly impressive, the lobby seems shoved against Mission St., sterile and an afterthought and the plaza is harsh and uninviting. For the beauty of the tower itself, it seems like Cesar Pelli left the room before the design of the ground level was complete.

^^Lobbies in such buildings these days seem to be mainly security spaces where would-be visitors can be quarantined and assessed.

As for the plaza, it's not finished yet is it? I seem to recall they ditched the sculpture--just as well IMHO--but are the trees in? The rendering seems to show redwoods which, if that's what they plant, should grow rapidly:

I believe I read the trees (homage to the Transamerica Tower) were 86'd.

I think that's correct. They made the plaza completely barren out of fear of homeless people. Which is completely stupid.

Where a large portion of SF's homeless are shipped from.

[QUOTE=timbad;8014302]on the First St side of the building, (the side that is not the plaza), sidewalk trees have gone in

anyone know what those white horizontal bars on the laced metal facade are for? ive also seen those on the curved corners of the transit center facing Park Tower. maybe something will be mounted onto them?

Well I don't "get" the connection between homeless and trees while San Franciscans love their dogs and dogs love trees . But if the plaza is truly completely just barren pavement with the lift to the roof garden sitting there, then I'll be disappointed in it too.

That vintage shot of the Call Building is epic. Shame they couldn't renovate it to have the original crown. Very rare nowadays to get that attention to detail. Those art-deco's were something else. Just over the top gorgeous and keen on detail.

Yeah the crown on the building was beautiful. I like the new cladding they put on it, it still looks nice, but it just isn't the same as that older ultra-ornate stuff.

Being from Chicago and passing the tribune tower on a daily base i can appreciate a gem when i see one but surely there must be money in san Francisco to rebuild this lost masterpiece!

Uh, surely the remodel is more "art deco" than the original.

The entire top of the building was demolished to add the upper setback floors. There was once a club and restaurant on top, among other things.

Excellent read, thank you!

What a shame that it went from being the most recognizable building to the least recognized!
