Mirvish + Gehry (previous and revised massing models) along side 212 King West.

Prolific render magician Steve Velasco has been busy the last few days.

steveve

steveve

An explosion of height west of the financial core. In addition to a slew of 200m+ proposed and u/c projects, 3 proposed developments include a super-tall: M + G and 212 King W,
and Union Park on Front Street W (right of the CN Tower). The tallest building in the country for more than 4 decades, BMO (left side) stuck at 298m, can only watch and bemoan
the lousy “nice try” super-tall plastic plaque it received from the CTBUH. Even super-tall SkyTower, on the waterfront to the east, render-bombs poor BMO.

Looking south east to King Street.

Plan to rebuild Yonge Street with wider sidewalks, fewer lanes goes to Toronto Council
Toronto Star article: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/202...y-council.html
“...proposal that would make dramatic changes to Yonge, at the same time as Toronto replaces 140-year-old water and sewer infrastructure underneath the street. Once reconstructed, Yonge Street would see dramatically wider sidewalks and the street itself reduced to just two lanes. As well, portions of Yonge would be closed to through traffic during the day in order to prioritize pedestrians and cycling.”
Along with Cadillac Fairview, 250 retailers and tenants are objecting to the reduction of traffic lanes between Dundas and Queen Street East. “the lane reductions would make loading and onloading for curbside pickup impossible and that restrictions on deliveries would be “catastrophic for businesses.”

The jigsaw puzzle drivers will have to navigate, depending on the time of day (when the pedestrian priority portions are closed to traffic).

The Well - 174m - 46s - RioCan - Hariri Pontarini - u/c

Nice comparison angles between the photo posted by Gabriel Hurl and the HPA rendering. The middle residential tower (2nd from the left in the photo) appears to be starting to climb above its podium.

Lower Don Lands Redevelopment

Terrific 2 minute fly-over of the new river valley and more.
https://youtu.be/ZBNPDxCzbek

Nice flashback from Northern Light, before the Portlands' industrial life.

Northern Light's comment regarding the 1.5 million litres of groundwater per day that is being treated during construction of the river valley: “The challenges of excavating what was once one of the largest (non-ocean) coastal wetlands on the continent. The original marsh was over 5km2, or about 1,200 acres”.

277 Wellington West proposed @ 233.5m - just a good look at the site of the proposed tower from steveve and the height coming to the Entertainment District

Some great shots by Richard Johnson of the CIBC Square 1 lighting test. I pretty sure the LEDs are programmable and look forward to future tests, particular with the use of colour.

Grand Hotel Redevelopment - 161m - 50s - Amexon - Core Architects - demolition

The epic piece by piece demolition of the former Grand Hotel (previously the RCMP Toronto headquarters) continues.
This may be one of the first developments in the city where the demolition phase is longer than the new build (?).

No doubt the 1929 art deco Toronto Star building (approx. 30s) took a while to be (sadly) demolished in 1972, to make way for Canada’s tallest building (BMO),
but betting the 72s bank tower (mistakenly clad in white Carrera marble ;-) took a bit more time to build than the demolition.

My ancestral homeland of Willowdale!

My Dad grew up in a house that used to be located near the corner of Yonge and Greenfield where the plaza for the Joseph Shepard Building is. My Grandmother last lived in the high-rise apartment just across Yonge Street from there. Burnett Avenue, just south of the cemetery, was named for my Great Grandfather.

West Don Lands: Blocks 17 + 26 - province issues MZO (Ministerial Zoning Order) to begin demolition of designated heritage buildings (circa 1917)

Despite in excess of 10 thousand of on-line signatures, the objections of local community members, city council members and the planning department, the province green-lighted the demolition of the first heritage building of the former Dominion Wheel and Foundries Company (est. 1914). There is no re-development plan in place for the site.

In the absence of any development plan whatsoever, one UrbanToronto forum member even drafted some ideas for a mixed-use development that incorporates the foundry's heritage buildings.
