Finally a nice proposal for Columbus and 400 feet as well. This will help define the north end of the downtown very nicely. The design?-well that getting tweaked a bit for the better would not be a bad idea really.

State earmarks $1 million for development at North Market

COLUMBUS (WCMH) -- Big changes are coming to the Arena District and the North Market in Columbus.

The North Market Tower development project is set to break ground in a few short months. NBC4 is learning the project is getting $1 million dollars from state lawmakers on top of a local tax break. Critics are calling it a misuse of tax dollars.

The North Market Development Association calls the new build a unique public space that will serve the entire community. The plan calls for a 35-story tower with residential and office space, and a large two-story atrium or arcade to connect it with the existing North Market.

“I am definitely excited, especially for a lot of the grocers in here,” said John Reese, co-owner of Black Radish Creamery in the North Market.

The North Market Development is expected to break ground by fall 2018, with a completion date expected within two years.

That's a good looking building. It looks more like an office tower than a residential one. It actually reminds me of the Williams Tower in Houston.

I agree the design is a looker. Love the ever changing shape of it as it reaches the crown.

I think this tower will be a great addition to the neighborhood. But, it's absurd that a 15-year tax abatement is provided to help "revitalize" arguably the strongest development area in Columbus! If the Arena District/Short North needs revitalizing, how would they describe North Linden or Hilltop?

"Though quiet for months, the 35-story North Market Tower plan remains on the table. First announced in 2017, the more than $100 million project would redevelop the parking lot into a mixed-use high rise that would include expanded market space, public space and additional parking.

The North Market Development Authority and developers Wood Cos./Schiff Capital Group are hammering out details of their relationship before the project moves forward. “We have one chance to get this right,” Wolfe said.The market’s priorities remain the same as when the plans first were announced.

They include a long-term financially sustainable structure to support the market, ensuring the tower fits with the existing historic building, and the ability to expand market services and operations. “It’s a complicated project at a crucial point with us and the developers and the city. It has to work for all of us,” Wolfe said. Michael Schiff, president of Schiff Capital, said he anticipates news soon on the project and remains positive about its progression.

The city of Columbus, which owns the land and is the market’s landlord, has taken a step back at this point. They need to take the time to go through and figure out what’s important,” said Columbus Economic Development Director Steve Schoeny. “We support a vibrant, viable North Market. This is important enough to be patient about.”
