I am completely onboard if you can find a company who will build a divided 1,600km freeway through Canadian Shield for less than $10 billion.

I remain skeptical.

Project Plowshare

Naturally, people thought it a terrible idea.

Without Federal help in building and maintaining, 2151 km of Highway 417 (Ontario) will be heck of a headache...

@wave46 ...

Edit: Actually ya’ll know what? It’ll be good even if Feds only agree to completely take over the maintenance (and twinning?) of TCH along Lake Superior Shore (587 km). That’s all that matters.

@swimmer_spe: Truckers not ready for winter? Train them in those kind of weather. Repeal the outdated law and allow trucks to chain up. Impatient drivers? Let the cops teach them some lessons.

Oh dear me....

Why are you stuck on the Superior Shore? It would be even more expensive. North of New Liskard, the land is less rock and more dirt, which makes for easy (and cheaper) construction.

As far as the drivers, you could double the cops, and you still wouldn't put a dent in the problems. Part of the issue is we all know, 20 over and you should be fine. That works for a car, but not when there are trucks only doing 15 over.

In that case, let the feds take over the twinning and maintenance of Highway 11 between Hearst and Longlac and of Highway 17 between Ignace and Sistonens Corner.

Getting the feds to take it on might be more of a challenge than actually getting it done.

The feds are good for passing the buck and signing cheques to ensure re-election.

But the feds won't do it because if they're going to spend the money, they're going to put it somewhere far more useful to a far greater number of people.

Sudbury only has 130M people though, and the feds are still willing to chip in (though everyone knows it’s a vote-buying plot).

?That describes how pathetic the BC road system is. Other provinces make pronouncements of huge road widenings, new roads, and freeways yet in BC putting up a fence is considered a major highway project worth noting.

Well given that people have been asking for it for quite a while, it’s quite the news. I just hope it’s twinned before installing the fence though.

The water’s so high. Would cantilever even work for 4-laning the highway?

Would you say you are on the fence about this project?

That stretch through 3-Valley Gap is just one of several sections of the TCH through BC that is so woefully inadequate it is unbelievable it exists in that state in 2019

I think that part probably have to be tunneled, maybe a short one into the cliff, or a longer one at the other side of the lake. So that could easily a half-billion dollar project...
