glancing at vienna (wien)

i was in vienna for christmas, but i must confess i didn't do a full, ssp-worthy job of exploring the place. it was a family trip: my family flew over from their various perches in california, montreal and toronto to celebrate the holidays in mitteleurope, and most of my time was spent doing that sort of thing, rather than riding the metro to the end of the line and walking back in with my camera finger prepped.

even so, i feel like i did see enough of the austrian capital to form an impression, and that impression was: wow, this is a lot better than pristina. that's my impression with a lot of european cities lately. perhaps i really am growing out of my skin-of-my-teeth/seat-of-my-pants/five-spanish-guys-snoring-in-the-hostel-bunkbeds-across-the-room years.

vienna is approximately the size of metropolitan vancouver, but is more impressive than all but a very few north american cities. history helps. the public realm and general aesthetic is neat and eclectic, mannered. i appreciate this. in the canadian forum, we are having a sartorial discussion right now that has basically divided itself into a clean "those are terrible shoes"/"you can't tell me what to do, you superficial snob" duality, as north america can be very manichean sometimes. i do appreciate an environment in which some things "are just done." i don't find it oppressive, i find it liberating.

on to the pics.

this was a really excellent (i assume) metaphorical painting of 19th century europe being assaulted by 20th century ideologies.

see you next trip!

I was also there during the past year. It's really an awesome city.

That's what you can end up looking like when you spend an extended period of time at the head a huge empire and take reasonably good care of your stuff.

Thanks for the pics!

I´d like to experience a trip to Vienna by winter. It must be a very pretty city, as we can see in your nice shots, kool maudit! I only miss the snow on the streets.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Vienna makes me think of all the North American cities where it's considered a stretch to preserve the last couple blocks of nice old buildings because they're not quite optimal cash generators for some absentee landlord somewhere. In Vienna the public realm and social benefit are first order concerns. In some other places they're not.

Actually that difference is pretty close to some of the reasons why the US is such a mess right now.

That Samsung is doing the job, kool. Nice shots all around.

Vienna is a spectacular-looking city to this post-modern-dwelling city guy. I've never lived in an area that wasn't mostly built within the last 100 years, so to me, it almost looks exotic. A perfectly-kept, old city. Which is funny, because I worked with a couple from Austria way back when in Vancouver, and they thought Vancouver was the most spectacular-looking modern place they'd ever been. They were mesmerized by the glass towers everywhere. I found that reaction was very common among western Europeans in North America. I was always puzzled by that, but then, it's the same as me drooling over what I was never able to experience on a daily basis.

That green grass on the other side, man....

I'm still not too familiar with this city so you covered enough ground to satisfy my initial impressions. Nice set!

Beautiful! This is the city that first introduced me to walkable urbanism. Visiting as a suburban American 14 year old, it was an eye opening experience to see such a clean, beautiful, safe and easy to navigate landscape of historic density, and lead me to forever question the suburban landscape I am surrounded by here in the States. I will always have a special love for Vienna!

rock me amadeus.

nice wieners there, kool. looks like they meant it when they built it. their take on amerika and australien indigenous peoples is not unlike ours of them, considering they gave us the governator.

Interesting city. Looks almost more Southern European than Germanic. Very clean town
