HAMBURG - again!

it seems like there's a little buzz about this city on the forum, but it's largely diserved : Hamburg has it all - except mountains and skyscrapers for some - and some others may argue that it has a poor weather.

but it's super green and blue, trees and water all around, it is sophisticated and cosmopolitan, very urban, gritty, trendy, hip and classy, but still authentic and laid back.

superb transit system, many elevated subway lines «flying» in green corridors. it is german but dutch and british and scandinavian in the mean time. when I think liveability, I think Hamburg. I make a guess : it's the next Barcelona, with all that existing and upcoming striking modern architecture.

pictures taken in May 2010 in Neustadt/Altstadt, Speicherstadt,
St. Georg, St. Pauli, Sternschanze, Altona, Rotherbaum, Harvestehude, Eppendorf.

I have way too many pics, if it reach page 2, I’ll post more.

With photos and a city that looks like that, I definitely don't mind seeing it again!

Great pics! I recognize many of these places (I also took photos of) but there are also many places I didn't see when I was there that you took pics of, I think it takes weeks to explore this large but partly cozy city.

Wow, that has to be some of the coolest modern architecture in the world. A good friend of mine is going to art school in Hamburg now. I'd love to visit!

Very nice. Keep the photos coming. Half of my family has ties to that city.

I intentionally put it all random to amplify the contrasts of the built environment.

Excellent collection of pics. Plenty of "Gruenderzeit" still survives but my favourites are the red brick buildings of the 1920/30's.

Great pics.

I love Hamburg, just 70 minutes away by car, try to go there at least once a month.

Hamburgers are probably the Germans with the most pride in their city, I've never met one who didn't think Hamburg was the coolest and greatest city in the whole world, sometimes it can get a bit annoying, imo even more so than people from Cologne and Munich.

If you go there for a visit I would advise you to rent a bike and discover the city that way. The city is very flat and the bike-lanes are fantastic.

Such an underrated place. Hamburg has the best neighborhoods of any German city IMO.

Very interesting thread. Hamburg looks quite progressive (and impressive).

That would be my idea. Being driven around in a car would be boring in a place like that and would seem like a waste of a good trip. Walking is good, but you can cover so much more ground on a bicycle with the freedom to go where ever you want. Plus it's cheap.

@alemaria:
It´s true that they are very proud of the city and sometimes it sucks to hear it again and again, but to be honest, i think we should not take it too
serious, because sometimes it´s just a little joke.
When Rolls Royce say "best car in the world" they don´t take it so
serious, too.
