The TRANSIT MAPS thread (hand-drawn or computer-generated, all are welcome)

Hey guys. I haven't posted in awhile, but I'm posting now for a couple of reasons ...

One, anyone who hasn't yet should really check out the explanation on Cirrus' website of his maps above. They're not just pretty pictures--a great deal of critical thinking went into the proposal. Very impressive stuff.

And two, I've got a new map of my own to post. Here's the shrunken version:

I should make clear, as it hasn't been made clear on a couple of websites that have linked to the map, that this isn't some fantasy of my own making. It's what the L.A. rail network will look like in 20 years if all projects currently being officially planned are built.

thats petaluma http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petaluma, pop. 54660 here in sonoma county, wine country and north bay region of the san francisco bay area.

santa rosa is the county seat. does that put me higher on the hierarchy?

petaluma is also the place where the pilot the cosco busan (the ship that crashed into the bay bridge and leaked hella oil) is from, and where polly klass was from (if ur old enough to remember that)

This is based on the map I posted on the previous page. It's a work in progress. (I'm going to add a 'North Belt Line' later.)

Link because the map is huge (1502 by 2002)

"North Belt Line" is the term used by the city for the street car that went to the north part of this map. As you can see, the north end is under serviced compared to the south end. (The south end is based on a grid system so its easier to add things, while the north end was a hodge-podge of big grid systems that didn't link up and lacks real north-south or east-west arterials. Current bus transit is more developed in the south end, as well.)

I'm going to put more thought into this. The LRT and Trams are quite worked out at this point, mainly based on a bi-directional loop through the downtown cores with links to the LRT system (They would be interchangeable; the only thing really different about the LRT from Trams is separation from traffic and possible elevation; the design of Intercity Mall would make it tricky to have an entirely indoor station unless it was elevated and accessible from the second floor of the mall..)

My next map will be more thought out and include my re-designed bus routes.

Some more from me:



A map of Thunder Bay Transit's bus routes (excluding rush hour loops) if they were a subway. This was made last summer when we had two trial routes to rural parts of the city, and when the Chippewa Park bus operates on weekends.



A fantasy subway map. I haven't gotten around to naming things. Four zones depending on the distance from the city centre.

1, 2, and 4 are subway routes. 3 is LRT with an underground portion inside the yellow loop. P is a people mover in a neighbouring city that has since been swallowed up by urban sprawl (something like New Westminster is to Vancouver), while the red C routes are commuter lines going to distant suburbs in various directions, the one on the west side using LRT cars alongside an expressway and then on downtown streets in a suburb, the other two using commuter buses, similar to GO's bus network. The city is based on the island city of Vitoria, Brazil.



This is a geographically accurate map of the city (made entirely by myself), the transit routes and stations are superimposed on a map of population density by land use zone. (I also made a map laying out land use zones.)

I got so sick of looking at UTA's junky official rail map on the way home each day that I came up with my own version:

This is my attempt at drawing all of the operating heavy rail lines in London (no trams or lines under construction, eg East London Line, DLR Stratford International Line, Crossrail, etc...). I used Google Maps and the London Connections rail map to plot the routes. There are some 600+ heavy rail stations in London, you can make out a few of the red National Rail and London Underground logos, but I haven't yet got around to labelling or clearly indicating them.

Lines don't represent the number of tracks (some sections have 6 or 8 tracks otherwise it would get ridiculously messy), but seperate routes are shown, for instance HSR1 runs under London in tunnels, but running above ground are other heavy rail routes (c2c commuter rail line, and then the North London Line).

The image is also very good at showing the green belt surrounding London which ensured that sprawl didn't take hold and consume the English countryside.

itsdenis: What does that map show? Are those the historic trolley lines? Current bus routes? Your fantasy plan for future streetcars? It's a cool map, but I don't understand what it's illustrating.

arkhitektor: Yours is definitely better, but if it were me, I'd color the purple line light gray instead, both to indicate that it's a different level of service and also so it doesn't clutter the map so much. That one line makes the rest harder to understand at a glance.
