I saw all of them at the Bob Bullock Museum and I also agree that it was my favorite especially the thought in how areas would interact such as the e/w 6th street area. My only concern is areas like the grove are dependent on planting a lot of live oak trees, etc... and may look barren for at least a decade. Overall though, I am glad they picked this as the 6th street section, refuge, and lattice/bridge were huge selling points.

To comment on the Live Oak situation. An idea I think they could look at is to allow trees to be moved to the site that have been removed from downtown lots that are being redeveloped. The trees that they would move would already be large established trees.

Great minds think alike! I was actually just thinking about this and was going to post it until I saw your reply. With all the development, at least a few mature trees could be moved. I think this would be crucial in giving the area a more mature look if there are a few large live oaks mixed in with <20 ft high trees.

I flew into Austin on thanksgiving day on an emergency to see my mother at Brackenridge hospital and we parked in the garage. I had my camera with me and I was very close to taking a photo of this very spot when I realized my battery was running low so I chose to save the battery and didn't get a chance to take a photo of this. It looks pretty impressive in person.

I've been running by on the trail a lot, trying to see if there is a big 'hole' into the ground to connect to the tunnel, but have not been so lucky. Anyone know more about how the outlet connects to the tunnel?

That odd piece of crane-like machinery must be a vertical driller of some sort?

In October they started pouring a wall so they can pump water out of the lagoon area and have dry land to work on. The wall will be removed when they're done.

There will be a vertical connection to the tunnel. That will help slow down flood waters. It will then go up and out into the lagoon. The water will then move into the Colorado in a cove area. They will have water ventilation between the tunnel waters and the river so that the creek won't become septic in drought times.

Waller Creek tunnel project progressing smoothly, officials say

Calling a news conference during National Flood Safety Awareness Week in the middle of a multiyear drought, city of Austin officials on Friday showed off what they called on-schedule progress of the Waller Creek tunnel project in Waterloo Park.

The project, which began in the fall of 2011 and is expected to be completed at the end of next year — not including above-ground park amenities — is aimed at saving lives and structures in the event of flash flooding. Officials say the project removes 28 acres from the flood plain and protects 42 structures from the park to the lake. A 1915 flood in the area, which was then much less densely populated, killed 35 people.

The above-ground amenities, including a 2½-story structure with a view of the Capitol, are expected to be completed in 2015.

The article states that the City Council will vote on plan this Thursday to spend $100 million over a 20 year period to fund this plan. So this is nothing but a pipe dream at this point.

Well this is extremely disappointing. What was the point in all of the voting for the plan in the first place? Over a 20 year period, any of the plans chosen would probably look quite different by the time they are done.

Agreed, the city is really causing more problems than anything else. Just get going on it once the tunnel is complete. It was a waste of time on public participation. They could have just picked whoever if that was the case. They wanted to public to feel like they had a say but reality is they are going to do what they want to do. More of what Austin has plenty of.

It looks like they're planning on replacing APD Headquarters with a park. This also shows the area surrounding the Fairmount Hotel.
