Based on the photos I'm seeing on Twitter, some major reconstruction is going to be needed on Highway 1 and 1A out towards Canmore after today. Transcanada is reportedly washed out at Cougar Creek and 1A is out around Exshaw. Plus Highway 40 has numerous mudslides affecting it.

Hwy 2 and HWY 27 interchange upgrades.

Long needed, this is one of the most dangerous spots on Hwy 2.

Hopefully Highway 1 and 22 is up for upgrading soon too. Same problem.

Over the last few years, the province has been systematically removing all of the cloverleaf interchanges along Hwy 2, it will probably come soon.

Now that the Hwy 2 / Hwy 543 interchange is open, how far east is Hwy 543 signed?
GIS Shapefiles from 2013 show the 543 designation ending at a realigned 96 Street East, east of the new Highwood River bridge.
Google Street View imagery from 2012 shows the new road open to traffic, but Hwy 543 is only signed to the west.
Wondering if the extension of the 543 number (vice just the physical road itself) is waiting on the Hwy 2 interchange opening, the roadway being twinned, or what.

Also: Does the new AB2 interchange have a signed exit number?

TIA!

R.I.P. Highway 1A (east)

As per an email I got from Alberta Transportation, it looks like with the transfer of Hwy 1A to Chestermere and becoming "Chestermere Blvd", Hwy 1A ceased to exist. There are no Hwy 1A signs in Chestermere and signage will be adjusted along Stoney Trail and Deerfoot Trail.

Quote:
I can confirm that the section of former Highway 1A between Calgary and Chestermere has been designated from the provincial highway network and renamed as Chestermere Boulevard and should no longer be referred to as Highway 1A. My staff in the Calgary District office will be working with the local highway maintenance contractors of both Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail maintenance areas to revise the references to this section of the former Highway 1A accordingly. This will help to avoid any confusion for motorists going forward.

That route is one of the oldest roads in the Calgary area.
Were the original names of Hwy 1A east of Calgary Morley Tr or Banff Tr? I should clarify that this only pertains to Hwy 1A east, Hwy 1A west to Cochrane and Canmore will remain.

This is exactly the problem at Glenmore and Deerfoot. This is probably the most poorly designed major interchange in the country at this point.

I can assure you Quebec has many worse interchanges. Its full of cloverleafs and extremely short merge lanes.

Is the renaming of the highway because the province is shifting full responsibility of the road to the local municipalities?

That’s a major aspect of it. In Alberta, most highways inside cities are maintained by the municipality, with some notable exceptions being Deerfoot Trail, Stoney Trail, and Anthony Henday Drive. As a result, Hwy 1A in Calgary has been maintained by the city for quite a while, while in 2013 Hwy 1A was transferred over to the (then) Town of Chestermere. If that didn’t happen before, the transfer likely would have occurred when Chestermere became a city.

The other issue is that with the last round of amalgamations, Calgary and Chestermere city boundaries now touch one another so the route never leaves the jurisdiction of an urban centre. The nature of the corridor is local, so it really doesn’t serve the purpose of a "highway" in the same sense as other routes, such as Hwy 1A west of Calgary.

I was wondering if any knew the history of Hwy 1A through downtown Calgary? I recall seeing on some older maps that Hwy 1A used to follow 16 Ave NW east from Crowchild Trail, go south on 14 St NW, east of 9 Ave S (west on 6 Ave S), and connect with 17 Ave SE which was also Hwy 1A. Right now, the only remnant is an AB 1A shield on EB 14 Ave NW approaching the 14 St NW interchange near SAIT.

Does anyone know when that section would have been decommissioned?

I think it was in the early 90's, but not positive.

The map below is from 1926, and shows in red the route you are describing. It used 10th street rather than 14th street north of the river, as the 14th street bridge wasn't built until the mid-1950s.

EDIT: It's entirely possible, probable even, that the 1A remained in use on central roads long after the 1 opened to serve as an alternative... I might look into that.
Thanks! The sign I was referring to is at https://goo.gl/maps/HpUdCuF9zEx.
