2026 FIFA World Cup

I still cannot even believe that us, Canada, we are co hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Even though we won the bid to host over 2 years ago back in 2018, we have less than 6 years until the world's greatest football tournament is in our backyard. Canada is set to co host the FIFA World Cup with USA and Mexico.

Canada we get to host 10 games, Mexico gets to host 10 games as well and USA gets to host 60 games. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will have 80 games in total.

16 groups of 3 teams...it will be a 48 team World Cup

I am waiting to see renderings of what the Olympic Stadium renovation will look like for it.

Yeah me too especially since I live in Toronto specifically and BMO Field is supposed to be expanded and renovated by 2026 in time for the World Cup

I wonder how things will go in Vancouver and Chicago who both turned down the chance to host games.
Wish Vancouver was involved.

Thankful Edmonton is a host city - will make the drive out for a game. By 2026 too, Canada should have a pretty decent team; certainly one capable of potentially qualifying even if we hadn't been hosts.

Yes I know I do too but apparently Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton are the 3 cities that will be hosting games in 2026. Specifically at BMO Field (Toronto), Olympic Stadium (Montreal) and Commonwealth Stadium (Edmonton). I know Edmonton they need to put in artificial grass because they have astro turf grass. But both BMO and Olympic have to be renovated that much I know.

Canada, USA and Mexico will all qualify automatically as hosts I think that is inevitable especially since this World Cup will be 48 teams and CONCACAF will get 6 spots potentially 7 because of the playoff

But I am also thankful that Toronto is a host city because I am from there. It will be easy to watch games here but traveling to Edmonton or Montreal to watch games, can drive there or take a bus or train to get there.

Here in Toronto, I know it is going to be hell as far as even getting tickets to games. I can imagine tickets being expensive but to get inside BMO is going to be brutal. It will be sold out every game but at the same time we get to see the world's best footballers as well as past legends of football all in our backyard.

Why is everyone calling it football? Don't we use soccer in Canada....

PS: Will definitely be making the drive to Edmonton if I can score a ticket. Shame that Vancouver isn't involved but great for Edmonton's economy.

Because it is FIFA, not FISA?

I'm surprised Vancouver turned it down. Why did they? They have the best stadium next to Commonwealth.

Ottawa was eliminated pretty quickly because our stadium is too damn small, but why was Regina rejected?

But what I love the most about this particular World Cup other than us co hosting with Mexico and USA is that this World Cup for the first time in history will have 48 countries. 48 teams. Which means it gives other countries a chance at getting to the show of all shows.

The Olympics were huge for Vancouver. I hope this helps boost other Canadian cities. Many who attended the Olympics liked Canada so much they decided to stay

Or buy vacation places which was great for our struggling economy at the time but many seem to now regret.

There was a 500 pager outlining the bid, potential host-city requirements etc.

Basically:

-airport size/connections
-market capture
-geographic coverage
-4star + hotel capacity
-public transportation
-media facilities/infrastructure
-destination activities/tourism potential
-reputation/resume of similar large-scale events
-political will
etc.

Makes sense. So Ottawa was likely eliminated for much more than its small stadium. That's the disadvantage of being situated between the behemoths that are Toronto and Montreal.

IG field in Winnipeg and Mosaic Stadium in Regina are the best stadiums in Canada right now far nicer than Commonwealth, BMO or the Big O but because we are smaller cities in the prairies they didn't bother to consider us.

Also at the time housing prices were high and anti-foreign money rhetoric was also at an all-time high. Hindsight regret for the last Olympics was also high.

Exactly and it is because of all of that why Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal were chosen but either way this is big business for the economy but a chance for the game of football to grow in this country
