Not sure if this has been released elsewhere but here's one of the final renderings of this project:

Looks a bit odd with the arched window thing on the corner, sort of out of place, although I understand the intent.

The arched windows on the corner are actually reclaimed stained glass from the church and are installed in a panel that will lean out toward the street. You will be able to walk behind this panel. Very nice reuse of the stained glass IMO

I thought the original proposal was quite attractive but this is short and squatty, cheap looking and fugly. I suppose this is what you get when the neighbors think they are architects and can design the building

I think this looks considerably better than the original proposal and much more in line with other buildings going up in the North End right now. The original reminded me of Clayton Park circa 2000.

do we know what they intend to use for the balconies? Hard to tell from the photo quite what colour or even material they are intending.

I also can see the intent of what they were going for with the stained glass, but with how they have done it it just looks like something that they stuck on the side as an afterthought. It either needs to be a focal point, or nothing at all, because right now it is just out of place/context.

Like I said I get the intent, and I do some stained glass myself, but I can't say that I find this use effective or interesting.

Page 12 show front view and p. 15 shows it in side view:

Have to say I agree, it's neat that they included it in the project, but the execution leaves a little to be desired. Would have been cool, IMHO, had they incorporated it into the actual building, with the stained glass catching light and shining it down into the lobby or something like that. You can do cool stuff with light through reflection and refraction if you use your imagination.

Hopefully at least it will be backlit at night to give it some effect other than a precast concrete slap sitting randomly in front of the building as if it were forgotten by the cleanup crew at the end of construction...

It seems to be either wood or gold-tinted glass.

Watched the Rick Steves travel in Europe on PBS today; Milan and Lake Como.
Too many bland buildings in HRM. Are developers philistines ?

When you think of Milan what comes to mind : Inter, La Scala ?

AC! Also, Duomo di Milano...

I think many of their potential customers are philistines. If people expected more, I think they would get more. Vinyl siding and the like should be banned in Halifax.

What I remember most isn't the "big" structures like the Duomo (as impressive as they were), but the constant dense dwellings with those gorgeous interior courtyards. Everything had a street presence, and then you got to peek through and see all these gorgeous courtyards.

Yes, but the streetwalls were quite tall (not Paris tall). Indeed, there were many spaces behind them.

I don't think anything in North America is remotely comparable, save maybe parts of New York and possibly Quebec City.

More dross posing as 'architecture' :
http://www.halifax.ca/Commcoun/east/...03item1014.pdf

After the initial approval I laid a detailed complaint re professional conduct with Nova Scotia Association of Architects and received a reply 9 months later. If you belong to a professional body make sure you never lie.

At HEMD Community council next Thursday.
Looks just like other projects by the same architect.
Do developers ever ask an architect to design a beautiful building ?
I wish HRM would put building permit info online at ExploreHRM.
