The original history of the church building dates back to the period between 1350 and 1400.
After its destruction in World War II, the present tower was redesigned by the architects Hopp & Jäger in 1963.

The fully realized Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Upper Manhattan would be a sight to behold if ever completed - which do to funding and very real engineering and soil suitability concerns likely never will be:
