Salina, Ks - The Flint Hills Series Part 4

Manhatten, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 1
Junction City, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 2
Abilene, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 3

It was time to head back out and continue on my journey!! As most of you figured, Salina was the next city!! This was a city I had planned on for a long time to get. I passed by it all the time on my way to Colorado, but never stopped!! It was time to check this place out and get it on SSP!! Salina is a city of about 46,000. It has maintained a 40,000 population since the 60s, and is slowly continuing to grow. It has an agricultural base with quite a few grain elevators. In fact it is home to one of the largest grain elevators in the world, but I didn't get it on camara!! Just take my word for it!! Well, let's not waste anymore time!! Wanna take a look??

I don't know what they were trying to accomplish with those stoplights, but it block a few good shots!!

Salina's tallest!!

Just north of the downtown area was the industrial area!!

A few more pictures near the downtown area!!

I think this is the courthouse. I can't remember now!!

Well, I think I accomplished enough in one day!! It was getting kind of late, I was tired from all the walking, my batteries were getting low and it was time to look for a place to stay for the night. I set out back into the Flint Hills to get close to my next destination!!

I love this place!!

I really like their stoplights!

Great mood in these shots... I really like the last two contrasting the amber fields with the dark grey skies... and this picture rules too...

Kansan urbanism depresses the hell out of me. Nothing but flat land, big lots, wide streets and under-detailed buildings. The industrial areas are oddly more appealing to me, however. Maybe because they are more authentic.

The last two shots are stunning!

The tallest is a jewel! I've been through Salina on I-135/I-70 many times on my way to Colorado but I've never been to the downtown area. There is a lake to the northwest of Salina called Wilson Lake that is surrounded by barren hills and is especially beautiful after a storm. If you're in the area photographing Russell or Hays you might check it out, I believe it can be accessed from I-70 via SH 232.

Nice! That tallest is an excellent little scraper.
The prairie shots at the end are ethereal. I'm digging this series.

Lovely. Thanks for sharing. Salina in many ways is a forgotten city, but it has the foundation to prosper once again if the stars ever aligned in it's favor. Some great buildings Downtown.

I'm diggin' that tallest too. So glad to see this thread. Hard to find good pics of Salina on the net (of course I'm not too smart, so that might be the problem ). Thanks for the tour kcex, nice series.

I like these a lot. Salina has an austere look about it, but I'd guess that improves some when things turn green and the weather becomes more amenable to outdoor activity. Some of the buildings are outstanding, and the downtown looks orderly, clean, and well-maintained. It's pretty impressive for a city of 46,000.

Pretty nice/large buildings for a town of that size. Really enjoyed the field shots at the end and some of the industrial shots (esp the first one).

Wow! Who knew there was so much Art Deco in Salina! Very cool mixture with the gothic and over revival styles. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for all the comments so far!! I wouldn't call Salina one of my better efforts. I was battling the rain, and time when I got there. I wanted to shoot a few residential neighborhoods but I'm sure there probably wosn't anything that you haven't seen before. I'm happy however that I finally got the time to stop and check it out!!

This is great. I have never seen Salinas before. It looks to be in pretty good shape with some handsome buildings. The Flint Hill shot is cool. The hills are really cool to see.
