Thanks!

The link to the NTCF funding summary page notes they're doing runway 06-24 as well, plus taxiway and lighting upgrades.

Anyone know what's going on with the longer-term plan to lengthen 06-24? Last I recall the city was assembling more land to reserve for that. The airport site still has the 2010-11 Master Plan linked on its Facts & Figures page but that must be out of date by now.

I imagine with Amazon and other cargo-related developments happening, freight traffic will only continue to grow and necessitate that project and additional taxiways.

I am not sure what this means...

Quote:
Swoop recently moved most of its Ontario operation from the secondary airport of Hamilton to the primary airport of Toronto Pearson. “We see the opportunity to expand in some of the so-called Tier 1 airports here in Canada. Toronto Pearson is Canada’s largest airport and, with our ability to offer ultra-low fares and point-to-point services, we feel there is an opportunity there for us with pent up demand, so this is the time for us to invest and get ready for 2021. This is an expansion for us, in addition to maintaining a very strong presence in Hamilton.”

Having flown Swoop a number of times out of YHM and prior to that Westjet I have had great experiences out of our little airport. For me anyway minimal delays, no cancellations and all my flights at least 95% full.

Usually from wheels down in Hamilton, taxi to CBSA and get through CBSA then to luggage and car then home it was 45 minutes. Not everyones experience but it worked for me.

Hey Westjet, if listening, if I cant fly out of Hamilton it will be back to Buffalo, not the hell hole called PIA.

Hope this strong presence is actually strong.

Flew with swoop a few weeks back, pax was roughly 90% and 70% respectively on my roundtrip flight. One of the flight attendants also said they are rumours of returning into London, ON.

Not Swoop but Westjet announced today a return to YXU-YYC 3x weekly, with a few extra holiday flights added as well, starting Dec 20. I think this will be the first passenger jet flight into YXU since the pandemic started.

Had the opportunity to view close up today the development going on at YHM. The Panattoni site is truly massive. A fair bit of inside work to be done before its up and running. This is the northern most building closest to Dickenson when viewed from Hwy 6. And to think the next phase is larger....good times ahead at YHM.

Thee Amazon site is getting the walls installed.

I had heard rumours of the amount of concrete being used and can report there is a temporary offsite cement plant up and running near both buildings..and non stop traffic.

There is security preventing closer access to the Amazon site.

Both buildings are about 25m from the the airport fenceline.

Not to forget the DHL building which seems pretty completed on the outside.

From Cargojet

(Just received C$350 million)

For:

Quote:
Expand Domestic Capacity and Facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic has generally increased demand for Cargojet’s domestic air cargo services due to the dramatic increase in e-commerce activity. The Company intends to use a portion of the net proceeds of the Offering to fund growth capital expenditures including the acquisition of five B-767 freighter aircraft for delivery in 2021/2022, as well as investments in a new hanger and additional land-based facility infrastructure in Canada. The infrastructure investments will support additional e-commerce volumes, driven by the ongoing pandemic, that are expected to establish a new higher baseline going forward.
Quote:
the acquisition of two long-range B-777 freighter aircraft for international routes for delivery in 2023.
Rumors are that they want to build a hanger twice the size of anything else they have at YHM.

The pandemic has been an economic nightmare for most sectors... air freight not among them.

The future of it at YHM is bright.

RIP Tony
https://bayobserver.ca/2021/01/20/11671/

Tony Battaglia, the man who more than any single person, spearheaded the transformation of Hamilton Airport from an underutilized white elephant to a thriving cargo and passenger terminal has died after a long struggle with cancer.

Prior to 1996 Hamilton Airport was managed by the City of Hamilton. At that time, its was a sleepy place– its passenger service consisted of a daily flight in a small turboprop to Pittsburgh and a similar service to Ottawa that operated in fits and starts. Through the 1980’s many small airlines had tried and failed to make a go of Hamilton. In hopes of breathing some life into the facility, the city decided to seek proposals on the privatization of the facility.

TradePort International
In 1996 Tony Battaglia headed a consortium called TradePort International. The group included Lee Smallman, area manager of Peter Kiewit and Sons, a major construction company; Brian Chamberlain, president of AvGroup, a Burlington company which designed the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum; Brian Harrop, president of Independent Ready-mix, a Hamilton construction and construction supply company, and Sam Barone, a former Transport Canada bureaucrat.

The TradePort bid was pitted against The Hamilton Airport Development Group headed by the Fracassi Brothers and Bobby Waxman of Phillip Environmental. This was 1996- when Phillip was still the darling of the Canadian financial media—its collapse was a couple of years away. The Phillip group engaged in aggressive public relations with full page newspaper ads promoting their bid.

Tony’s group took a more strategic approach, relying on a behind-the-scenes government relations strategy that as in part developed by the late Eric Cunningham. Ultimately the contact to operate the facility went to TradePort and Tony Battaglia became its first CEO.

(At that time, this writer had quit as news director of CHCH and had formed a Hamilton branch of Cunningham’s Toronto-based PR company. We started out with a few local clients—one of them TradePort.)

Airport development
During Tony’s time at Hamilton Airport, he was responsible for attracting cargo tenants like UPS, getting the main runway rebuilt to accommodate the largest aircraft and lobbying Queen Park for the Highway 6 extension that serves the facility. In 2006, he stepped aside telling reporters he was a builder, not an operator and wanted to get back into construction and development where he had found success before TradePort.

At that time Hamilton’s Director of Economic Development, Neil Everson said, “The TradePort-Hamilton deal has been recognized as one of the best public-private partnerships in Canada and that’s largely through Tony’s efforts.”

More later.

It killed what seemed like a finally consistent and building passenger business at the airport though. hopefully it’ll bounce back after this is all over, but who knows.

Very unfortunate. It likely would have surpassed 1 million passengers last year if there was no pandemic.

From YHM's news letter

Quote:
Following three years of unprecedented growth, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport began 2020 with its busiest January and February in its history and was on track to have its fourth consecutive year of record-breaking performance. That was until the pandemic was declared in mid-March and passenger air travel began to plummet globally. As we closed out the year, 329,193 total passengers travelled to/from Hamilton International representing a 66% decrease compared to the previous year.
Quote:
In 2020, 658 million kilograms in total cargo aircraft billable landed aircraft weight was facilitated through Hamilton International, representing a 24% increase compared to the previous year.
Quote:
Hamilton International also looks forward to welcoming back service between Hamilton and Winnipeg with flights being added to Swoop's roster for 2021 and travel available as of late April. More details surrounding Swoop's complete 2021 Summer Schedule are expected to be announced soon.

Obituary: ‘Amazing businessman’ Tony Battaglia spurred Hamilton airport to new heights

By Daniel Nolan
The Hamilton Spectator
Mon., Feb. 8, 2021

Tony Battaglia is being remembered as a man who had a good head for business and who helped the Hamilton airport take off.

He’s also being remembered as a loving father who found time to be at his children’s activities despite a busy schedule, including coaching hockey and soccer.

Battaglia was one of the founders of Tradeport International, which took over operation of the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport from Hamilton-Wentworth Region in 1996 under a 40-year deal.

He served as president and, under his leadership, the airport developed into one of the busiest cargo and courier centres in Canada, and hit one million passengers per year in 2003.

“He had that vision but he also had that courage to implement,” said friend Ron Foxcroft, the well-known businessman who now heads Tradeport. “He was always moving forward in a straight line. He said to me we are going to be a dominant cargo airport in Canada.”

Foxcroft said the name Tradeport comes from Battaglia’s vision for the airport, which eventually landed such companies as United Parcel Service and Purolator Canada Inc.

“He talked of passengers but he also wanted Hamilton International to be a trading port.”

Battaglia, involved in other ventures such as the Royal Connaught project and the Hamilton Bulldogs, died of cancer on January 19. He was 64.

The airport is now the largest overnight express cargo airport in Canada, but passenger service dropped off when WestJet, which arrived in 2000, moved the majority of its operations to Toronto in 2004. In 2018, it saw 725,000 passengers per year.

Battaglia stepped down as Tradeport president in 2004 and sold his shares in 2007 to focus on developing the lands surrounding the airport.

He was presented with an Italian Heritage Award of Distinction from Festitalia Hamilton last year. “His work related to the Hamilton airport has helped, for today, to spur millions of dollars in economic spinoff and job creation that will continue to grow as the airport business district evolves,” said organizers.

First Gulf is a huge commercial developer - they were the lead proponents of East Harbour in Toronto before selling it to Cadillac Fairview. their residential arm, Great Gulf, is also the developer of 1 Bloor East and the Mirvish-Gehry towers.

The parcel they purchased is 412 Garner Road East, right beside Highway 6. There was a plan of subdivision filed in December I believe. This is possibly the primest land in the AEGD as it's directly beside the 403, and the closest lands to the GTA.

According to this, the Mohawk's Aviation Centre opened last month.

https://www.thespec.com/business/202...this-week.html

Mohawk College has launched a new aviation training facility aimed at filling a skills gap in the industry, and will partner with related businesses to research solutions to their problems. The Mohawk Aviation Centre opened Feb. 9. The 75,000-square-foot facility, located in a hangar at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, includes a Boeing 737 NG virtual maintenance training system — a first for a Canadian college — and 10 simulator seats, the largest number of any training centre in North America.

The programs offered at the facility focus on aircraft maintenance, aircraft structure, and avionics maintenance.

The facility also includes a space dedicated to joint research projects with local companies looking to address a technical issue with their products or operations, says college spokesperson Bill Steinburg.
