Do you think they will modernize union station in some way when/if it has HSR...Thats transbay and all those theoretical stations they visualize have me jealous! If not a new terminal, put a nice modern canopy over the existing one.

Very nice, the vids are well done.
Aslo it looks as if they are useing the JR 700 series for the newer renderings.

Hey, we have another train aficionado among us :-) Yes that is definitely the 700 series, with its distinct duck bill nose.

I have yet to ride on the N700 but I saw them a few weeks ago when I was in Japn.

Yeah the N700 is the newer version, it tilts, I think. And yes the 500 is awesome, but alas, it was apparently too expensive to build and maintain. The N700 appears to be replacing it on all Nozomi service. If we got even the 700 series here, it would be pretty amazing.

I dont know about that, I dont want to be chugging along to LA at 50 mph

This has tremendous potential, but I hope that if its built, it will end up looking as good as they display it to be.

It won't be worth the money if it doesn't follow through on the promises of quick trips.

Oh it'll have to be quick, otherwise, whats the point. I was refering more to the design of the stations. Some of those look pretty nice. But I wonder if the real life designed ones are similar to those or just generic.

which makes me wonder why they would add so many spots to the LA area rather than trying to shorten the time on longer trips.

Not all trains will stop at all stations.
I know this is kind of a new idea for the usa

heck, if they can extend the current central valley train from Bakersfield to LA, even at 50 mph it'll be a good start.

Indeed. So strange how the only link between north and south for amtrak is the unreliable Coast Starlight.

Why don't they run a regional train along that route, and limit the Starlate to between Sacramento and Portland?

Well, hopefully it can work out where people wanting to get between the bay area and LA can take the high speed rail, and people can take the starlight (and maybe coast daylight?) to central coast cities.

Well, if we're talking about any old rail line, then yes, that would be an improvement. I've known for some time now the reputation of the Coast Starlight (or "Starlate" as Nutterbug reffered to it). Of course, HSR should be a vast improvement over even that.

CA High-Speed Rail Initiative - "If We Don't Pass This, We Will Never Have High-Speed Trains in the US"

California State Assemblywoman and Majority Whip Fiona Ma, a leading advocate for high-speed rail in California, was on hand last month at the Ecocity World Summit to talk about the $10 billion bond initiative for high-speed rail in California this November. The vote on the bond has twice been postponed, in 2004 and 2006, and could be postponed for a third time this year.

Ma, however, believes that, after 10 years of work on the initiative, this year may finally be the "perfect storm" that gets the plan approved, due to rising gas prices, road congestion, endless lines at the airports and the latest airline crisis. Japan, Ma noted, has had high-speed rail for 40 years, and France for 25. Countries all over the world are now developing high-speed rail, and California and the US are "light years behind" the rest of the world.

High-speed rail is the most environmentally-sound option for meeting California's future transport needs, and must be part of the discussion about global warming.
California is the world's 12th largest single source of carbon emissions, and emissions from transportation make up around 38% of total emissions. While Governator Schwarzenegger has committed the state to drastic reductions in greenhouse emissions over the next several decades, car-based planning has led to serious increases in automobile miles traveled in the state.

According to Ma, the proposed high-speed rail line, running from San Diego to Sacramento, with travel times of two and a half hours between LA and San Francisco, would be the most effective single investment that the state could make to lower greenhouse emissions, improve quality of life and stimulate the economy.
